The graphics card has gone weird on my PC. It'll surely die off any day now but I've been running like this for quite a while now with yellow banding down my screen.

I used to be a big gamer but not so much these days. There's still a part of me that may go back to the odd game so when looking for a new card, I thought I'd get something that could make that possible but still staying away from the hundreds of pounds.

Happy to go second hand if it's a good card. I used to play a lot of BF2, so it's been quite a while now! BF4 looks a giggle, so I've had a slight look at benchmarks of these to get a rought idea of cards.

Happy to not ultra high settings, I guess highwould be my aim, there or there abouts (if I ever get back into it!). From a bit of reseach, the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 760 looks like an okay start and goes for around the ~£100 mark on ebay for example.

So, with £100 to spend, what is a good buy these days? Happy to go new, but thought I could open up a bit more head room going second hand.

My RAID 0 is old hat these days with SSD's doing the rounds. Ahh the good old days.

I've got a 760; it's a very decent card. Chews through most things easily enough.
Make sure your power supply is up to it though.
Also check your ram too, it's a very cheap way of upgrading.

Check the ram for...? I've 4 gig which does my current non gaming tasks fine (or fine for older games) at the mo. Every now and again I get into the gaming mode again and spend money and build myself up a beast.

Good recomendation on the card though.

Speed and amount. To upgrade to 8Gb of DDR3 is not much at all, and if you are going for newer games (which you might as well if you get a 760) it'll come in handy.
Although, then you will start looking at your processor and thinking.. hmm.. and then before you know it you are already up to a grand with an uber machine biggrin

Big tip (if you haven't already) - get into the steam sale while it is still on!

The AMD R9 270x is good value at the moment, £130 on Amazon and obviously a bit less second hand. Marginally slower than the gtx 760 but not by much. Also, being AMD it uses Mantle on BF4 which helps.

It could possibly increase the performance of AMD hardware in supported games (of which Battlefield 4 is one)

This will eat through pretty much any game on the market at the moment

Been through a simillar situation about 3 months back with a 5 yr old pc running winxp with 4 gb ram and a q6600 @3ghz, like yourself was into games but not for these last few years.
A while back started playing world of tanks which after a while started to crash repeatadly after a game update so I decided to change gfx and upgrade operating system.
Got one of these http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/GeForce_GT... and am running game at pretty high settings.
If you upgrade the ram make sure your operating system supports this otherwise windows will not use the extra ram unless you are using 64 bit windows.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-Dual-X-Radeon-GDD...

A little over budget but looking at benchmarks its quite some way ahead of the GTX 750 Ti.

ETA:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-Express-260X-Grap...

This is the card below the 270x and in battlefield 4 benchmarks is almost identical to the 750 Ti

And again:

Second hand 270x.

In an expensive twist, I've ended up with two cards.

I bid the starting bid on one expecting it to go up past my bid. It had a good few days to go when I bid on it.

In the meantime I bid and won another card having forgotten about my original previous bid.

So I now have a R9 270X and a R7950 in the post to me.

Thanks for the recommendations kids. Anyone want to buy my spare graphics card????

Right. The seller of the second card, the 270X emailed to say that the listed shouldn't have still been live due to not actually having the card in stock. So in the end, I only received one card.

That's eBay for you, s.

He obviously didn't get the price he wanted.
