I've got an i5 with 8GB RAM, plus a decent graphics card (an MSI GTX 280 if memory serves)
Will this have enough punch to run Project Cars well? Not installed a single game on it so really no idea how it performs. There is a real time 'floating head' demo that knocked my socks off though.

Was going to get a PS4 for this game, but seem to be 2 reasons going for PC copy ... the title is cheaper, plus sounds like my Logitech G27 wheel wont be supported.

Believe it or not, it's taken me this long to get the PC all sorted in the garage. Had first session on Project Cars last night - what a CRACKER.

Visually it's great.. however I see a bunch of settings have defaulted of 'low' or 'off'.

So a question to PC experts here.. I have an i5 PC with GTX470 gfx; if I were to upgrade would I need to swap both PC and card, or could I have all the settings 'on' by upgrading only one?

I've never looked at Project Cars specifically but the vast majority of games are constrained by the graphics card long before a modern CPU. Your CPU is above min specs although without knowing which i5 it's difficult to know by how much. The GTX470 is 4 generations old GPU tech so I suspect if it's video setting you're talking about the GPU is holding you back.

Before making a recommendation for you to rush out and buy a new GPU though there are a number of questions that need answered:

What resolution are you playing at?

What's the rating/make of your power supply? (More powerful GPUs require better power supplies)

What's your budget?

Just pick up a 750 Ti for <£100 and you're good to go for 1080p gaming that is. Maybe upgrade your RAM dont need any more than 8gb

i5 is fine, most games won't use more than 4 cores.
A GPU upgrade would improve things visually. Post a budget and someone will make a suggestion.

The projector is 1080p. Love to go 4K - but £££££££££ - not yet, one day.

PSU is a meaty one , bought it when I had Novatech install the i5 & RAM (old mobo failed couple years back.. took the opportunity to upgrade). Think it's 850w or thereabouts.

I'd just like to tick all the effects on to turn it from 'wow' to 'WOOOOW'

Hmmm.. looking at GTX cards on amazon..
looked at GTX 780, around £300 then spotted GTX 970 which is cheaper. What gives?

The GTX 780 is a previous generation card that was more expensive than the 970 when new (replaced by the 980). I think they go for around 150-200 on ebay now. 970 would be the one to go for given the choice as it is newer and has marginally better performance. I have 2 780's but I'm not looking to sell at the moment.

I see that GTX780 has more cores than the 970. (2880 vs. 1664)
Would this large number benefit Project Cars?

The numbers are not directly comparable, Kepler vs Maxwell architecture. The 970 is marginally the faster card and also has 4GB of VRAM vs 3GB in the 780.

I don't have any major issues running this with my AMD 7990 on a HD monitor with stuff up quite high.
It's horrible with the RIft though, really laggy.

Sorry, it's a 7970 not a 90 - It was £250, 2 years ago.
It seems like it's known as the R9 280x now
