Minecraft - numpty newby question please

So the missus surprised me by getting me a sparkly xbox one on Saturday. Set it all up and thought I'd see what this whole minecraft carry-on is about. Downloaded it expecting to be presented with a huge world full of exciting stuff with thousands of other minecraft users all building their stuff.

Instead I get a few tutorials and my own 'new world'.

What am I doing wrong? Where is everyone else? There is an online menu option which constantly says no games found.

I think at the moment you can only play with other people if they are in your friends list, at least that seems to be how it works on PS4. Also I don't think you can play with 100s, more like 8

My 6 & 9yr olds are at school at the moment, but I could ask them to come on here and answer your questions when they get home if you like? They're constantly on multiplayer worlds!
