Does FIFA 15 on Xbox 360 need Live Gold for multiplayer?

We have just bought our son an Xbox 350 & FIFA 15 but her says he needs to get the Live Gold @ £39.99 a year in order to play multiplayer with his schoolmates. Is this correct?

Yes, although you can pay it monthly for about a fiver a month.

Without gold he won't be able to play online on any game.
