XBOX 360 controller not connecting?

I have a 360 I inherited and have never really spent much time with, my son however loves it. Anyway, we took our controller to a family get together at the weekend so the boys could play three up in their consol, since getting home it won't connect to our box, the x button just sits and spins. Tried Googling and found the 'connect' button on the consol and handset but this didn't work. Any ideas? If I need a cable to link the two then I need to go get one, but if anyone has a work around I'm all ears.

There's a button on both the console and controller, press the controller one and it should reset itself
