Xbox One - backwards compatibility announced
Discussion
we were originally told it couldnt be done,
then 'someone is looking into it'
and now:

this is great as it means one less box under the TV, and the 360 can be put aside unitl Benzo Jnr is old enough for the lego games.

Only 21 games are backwards compatible at the mo (and quite an odd mix at that)?

Hopefully more to come...

Microsoft says it should have more than 100 games ready for the program when it launches for all this holiday season, and that all developers need to do is approve their games for the system to make them available -- no extra work should be required.
So whatever 'approve their games for the system' means, a lot more games should be available by the time it rolls out.ajprice said:

I'm sure they will realise their error at some point but I hope they honour their wrongly advertised priced.
...saying that, just been to get the link and they have removed it and cancelled the preorder!!

I've never really seen the point of backwards compatablilty tbh. My PS3 had it when I bought that and I never used it.
If I'm buying a next gen console surely you play next gen games on it?
I want one of those controllers though.
This. I don't get it. I play considerably more hours than average yet have never once thought I wish I could play a 360 game where I haven't had a 'current gen' game to play. Same way I'm not really fussed for remakes (other than Halo!).If I'm buying a next gen console surely you play next gen games on it?

I'm still gutted MS didn't stick to their guns with the original one use only disc idea - the used games market is dying out with all the DLC that's released these days meaning games are rarely 'finished' and by the time there is no more DLC there is a sequel.
You can vote here for what games you would like to be backwards compatible, I've just been to it and voted for Forza 2, 3 & 4 and Forza Horizon 1

Of the two 360 games I still play online one isn't even an option (OverG Fighters) and the other (Battle Stations: Midway) has 191 votes. To me it just seems like a way of milking the crap out of the CoD franchise some more, lets face it they're the games that will get the most votes!

Sticking with the DRM model would have killed the console stone dead hence the rapid U turn.
Does anyone know if the backwards compatibility will allow someone running the game on an xbox one to co-op play with someone running the game on an xbox 360?
That would be the only value I can see as it would mean being able to play with my wife/son on games that allow co-op but not split screen multiplayer. That would be pretty cool without me having to duplicate a machine I already own.

Yes and no...
Technically yes as the xbox 360 emulator logs in to Xbox Live as if it was another console - so online multiplayer and co-op etc should work.
It might not work for two reasons:-
1. They just put out an updated preview build that says it addresses some online multiplayer issues with BC titles...so it doesnt sound like it's working that smoothly
2. Xbox's generally confuse the hell out of routers. They all want the same ports open and forwarded to themselves, which can cause conflicts etc in some routers (as normally if you try to do it manually you can only forward one port number to one device). I can imagine that an Xbox 360, running inside an Xbox one, trying to open the same ports as another real 360 on the same network could get...interesting.
The best way to find out is obviously try it and see if it works.
You'll both need a gold subscription too I think
