vr headsets, is anyone getting one?
Discussion
Ive never been an early adopter of new tech and still have my xbox 360 rather than a next gen console. Ive been reading alot about the VR head sets that are coming out and its something I really want to try and see what its like but I have a feeling its going to flop and people wont buy them.
I loved the idea of 3d movies and then I went to see transformers 3 at the cinema and was left underwhelmed with the main problem being once the action moves off screen the illusion is lost, plus it gave me a headache. That problem should be solved with the VR units.
I also loved the tech behind the kinect, there were so many cool things you could do with it like finger tracking all without having to add another accessory to your person but the developer havent embraced it and the kinect is pretty much dead.
Will the VR units follow?
At the moment there are 3 main players:
The HTC/Valve unit which is coming out this year. It has some very cool tech using lasers in the unit which bounces off the headset and map your room creating a workspace letting you walk around your room and it tracks your movement and relays it down to the game, There is also the hand units which look cool and also track your hand movement. The problem with all this is obviously you are limited with the size of your room, so how are developers going to deal with this and also is there going to be enough developers making good quality games to make it a worth while purchase. There is also the fact you need a very high spec pc to run the games and you are still at relatively low res on the oled screens so you can see pixels.
The oculus rift suffers from the same problems, I think it has a better field of view than the others and will need a hardcore rig to run it. It does have head tracking which using a camera that you mount on your tv. This is coming out early next year.
Then your have the morpheus which will run on the PS4. From what ive read because of the limitations of the PS4 the games wont look at good but will be more accessable over the others, you also have the controllers which could work well.
So whos getting one? which one you getting? and do you think they will sell or is it going to crash and burn like 3d tv's and the Kinect?

Hi,
I think this is one of the most exciting times in gaming.
I moved from PC to PS3/PS4 as my gaming moved into the living room but now I could see myself going back to a proper PC gaming rig into the study upstairs. I will buy the one that gives the best experience. As much as the Morpheus would just slot into my living room PS4 setup, if it is too limited in capability, I will not want it as the only option I have.
I really reckon this will be a cool time in gaming :-)
VR for the win!
Cheers

Almost certainly not.
I remember it being the next big thing in the 90's - obviously the 'experience' was much worse back then, but it wasn't that, that killed it - it was pretty much on-par for the games of the time, but it never really captured the imagination - you felt like a bit of a berk and it made me feel a bit sea-sick
You need a lot of room for it, sitting on the sofa and turning your head around isn't going to cut it - you need to move around - which means a room completely devoid of obstacles, forget 'baby proof' more "Daddy pretending he's battling aliens whilst completely blind to the real world proof".
It'll be expensive, about £350, plus you'll likely need to upgrade your PC - in the hope they make more than a half-dozen games for it - I think back about laser guns, dance mats, gloves, Kinetc, PS eye etc etc which we all cheaper and simpler and never caught on. never forgot 80% of PC gamers are still using an interface with button set out in a fashion which suits typing.
But more than that it was meant to be THE THING at E3 this year, all the press were talking about it pre-show, then it turned out to be a bit damp, they showed the helmets of course, but none of the big games makers had any games did they?

I dont think there were any official games announced but morpheus did have a few game demos in a back room for people to try which were made by different developers who are currently developing a full game including naughty dog.
One of the demos sounded quite interesting called the kitchen, They sat you in a chair and put a controller in your hand and in the demo you are sat in a chair with your hand bound together so mimicking the same position in the game to real life. Someone is laid on the floor and wakes up and try to cut your free, then some ring type freaky women jumps out and attacks the man, they end up in the hall way and you can hear screams and unpleasent noises then it goes quite, after a while the women then drops down from above and attacks you and the screen goes black.
I think horror games could work really well with the VR.

Obviously driving games work as your sat down. I just cant see how a normal first person shooter would work. I think you will just end up feeling sick.

I've had an OR DK1 (crap) and a DK2 (which is brilliant). A major issue is the screen door effect on the DK2 this means you can see the individual pixels as your eyes are so close to the screen. The Dk2 runs at 1080 and that's not good enough. Next version and probably the Valve version will need to be a higher resolution. I don't think this has been released yet. The Morpheus will have to run 1080 as the PS4 can't do any more, I think this will kill it for the PS crowd as it won't be a good enough experience.
Ignoring the graphics the experience is brilliant. I use mine for sim racing (iracing) and nothing comes close, it's also very good for stuff like Elite/flight sims. Pretty much anything where you have fixed controls. Forget about using a keyboard/mouse. It's the immersion that makes this brilliant, it is miles better than 3D movies, you are actually there, in the game.
I'm interested to see how it pans out, not sure about the room mapping/movement bit you will need a controller. It going to be niche, it's too expensive with too high PC spec requirements for casual users plus many people get VR sickness (like motion sickness). I can't wear one specific pair of glasses and need my spares. Plus there is going to be a potential split in the market, will all game support all suppliers, will it be like nvidia/amd or exclusive content.
I doubt the market will be big enough for VR exclusive products, at least for AAA titles so there will be an element of mix and match. It's not just a simple case of rendering the game right, the menus and support structures need to be right as well and not many support that side so getting anything to work at the moment is hit and miss but I accept the current release is a beta/developer release.
If anyone can make this work it's Valve but OR have the lead in product support. Not sure who I will go with right now, it will depend on who supports my games.
I'm happy to demo to people if anyone is interested.

I did think of a business around the VR headsets. Because they are going to be niche and expensive you could get a couple of good setups you could look at offering a vr experience and renting it out to pubs etc.
Ive not looked into it enough but depending on how much you could charge could be a good side earner.
Yea I like toys and having lost my dedicated cinema room (120inch
) - when moving into a new house. So I am searching for anyway to have a big screen experience without bolting a projector on the ceiling.
I'll get in there early and pre-order, if I like it ill keep it. If not I'll sell it shortly after....

Which one are you going to buy?

Definitely getting an Oculus.
Went on one at Goodwood this year which simulated being in one of those Red Bull stunt planes. The effect was insanely real. I felt like I was actually moving around it was odd. Few people came off feeling sick actually.
Being able to look around within an environment is another level.
Cant wait. Racing games will never be the same.

Played GTA5 on a friends OR set up, it was incredible. When the technology catches up with our imaginations I will be purchasing one without a second thought.
Asseto Corsa was unreal, fantastic experience- his PC is mega though, couple of ££££'s worth of equipment at least!
God I didnt even consider something like GTA5. Having an entire open world to explore is just going to be mind blowing.Asseto Corsa was unreal, fantastic experience- his PC is mega though, couple of ££££'s worth of equipment at least!
