Can someone explain (to an old thicko) how Fifa works these days?

In particular the Ipad version. My son is nattering for it, and I searched for Fifa 16 on the app store and it came up with Fifa 16 'Ultimate Team'.

What is this 'Ultimate Team'? Is this the normal version of Fifa that I used to play 15 years ago lol, or is this Ultimate Team something else?

Also, I notice it's free? Surely there's in app purchases? How much is it going to cost me to get the full version?

Ultimate team is just an app that lets you buy and sell player for your fantasy team on the actual game

Not sure about the ipad version, but on Android there is a Fifa 16 Ultimate Team, which is a proper game (as far as I am aware). The thing I have on my phone for transfers etc is just called Fifa Companion. Not played the mobile version, just the PS3/PS4 versions of Fifa, so can't say if the mobile one is worth bothering with.
