The Sheer Value in Playing Older Games
Discussion
I love my basic Xbox 360 and I continue to be astonished at just how cheap old games are. This afternoon I bought the following:
Gears of War: http://uk.ign.com/games/gears-of-war/xbox-360-7478...
Yes, it's from 2006 but it was a damned fine game then and from what I can see it's still a damned fine game.
Rage, Anarchy Edition: http://uk.ign.com/games/rage-anarchy-edition/xbox-...
This one dates from 2011 - Haven't played it yet but the reviews look good.
Bulletstorm: http://uk.ign.com/games/bulletstorm/xbox-360-14274... (Mine is the "Epic Edition")
Had a quick go with this, great fun. Loads of swearing fun and top weapons blazing action.
The cost of these three? Four quid from GAME. Hours and hours of fun for the price of a pint, and when I'm done with them they'll still probably fetch £1 each. Hell, I might even get my money back.
As well as the above I've got Skyrim, Forza 4, Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 2, Dungeon Siege 3, Crackdown 2 and IL2 Sturmovik and the total cost of the whole lot is still well under £30.00. They'll keep me busy for ages.
Got to love playing these older games I think.

I just bought Resistance 1 and 2 and Halo 4 for £7. Halo is a tad dull but the /resistance games are good if dated (and on the stupid PS3).
Have you tried Singularity? Definitely in my top 10 of 360 games.
No I haven't, but I shall look out for it next time in GAME or CEX. Thanks for that.Have you tried Singularity? Definitely in my top 10 of 360 games.
Used to be the case that things were progressing so fast that games a couple of years old were virtually obsolete. Now though things have slowed down a bit, and games have a much longer shelf life. Graphics etc got "good enough" in the late noughties. Still loving L4D 4 player LAN games and that's 6 years old now.
As I've gotten older, I'm happy just to wait for games now. The slew of DLC that inevitably comes, the patching that is essential, and the rise of cheap online keys means that by waiting 6-12 months, you usually get a better, cheaper game anyway which is fixed and has more content.
The fact that I nearly always have a backlog of stuff to play anyway - not got around to Witcher 3, Dragon Age, GTAV or others yet means I'm usually 12 months behind anyway

Couldn't agree more. When I found that the PS4 was lacking in good content on release, I went and watched all the "top 20 under recognised games on PS3" youtube videos and others similar. Conclusion was loads of games that I hadn't yet played but were now available really cheap and have really enjoyed it.
I have thought of adding an Xbox 360 to my collection just to play some exclusives it had. Not quite justified that yet.
I played Dark Souls, Demon Souls, Borderlands and a few others for very little money.
On the PS4 I am now trying to run 6 months behind the curve to save some money. I picked up Witcher 3 for £24 at game brand new on Friday. Only issue is fallout 4 which was pre-ordered as soon as I heard of it's existence :-)

You should be able to pick up Borderlands 2 for a few quid - well worth it to see if you get on with it as it is potentially well over 100 hours of awesome content.
Oh yes. That game rules, and is unlikely to date very much anyway.Just got BF4 myself, for 15 quid. Total bargain.

Taking that to the extreme, consoles like the Mega Drive still have stunning graphics for the 2D games. Where as consoles like the Saturn and PS1 have aged horribly from a visual perspective, the big gorgeous sprites from the predominantly 2D era still look superb.Quackshot is a personal favourite of mine, superb tight game design and lovely visuals.
Call me old fashioned but I also prefer single player games (which are becoming increasingly rare), with multiplayer strictly reserved for physically sitting next to somebody.
Sadly it's getting more and more challenging to play them natively at anything approaching acceptable levels, many new TVs have even got rid of Scart and CRT screens are largely a relic.
I still play s
tloads of games from my childhood.
Particular favorites include:
Sonic the Hedgehog
Streets of Rage
Lemmings
Final Fantasy VIII
Front Mission 3
Pokemon Yellow
Those are ones I have on my phone running through emulators.
On the PC I still play:
All the Command and Conquers (I believe that the first one and Red Alert are available as freeware these days)
Dawn of War
Mechwarrior 3 and 4
Theme Hospital
You can't beat the old games man!

Pretty sure it's only going to be select games that are marked for backwards compatibility on the Xbox One, opposed to being able to bung in any old 360 game. I also thought the games that are backward compatible would only be available by digital download? I.e. you would still have to purchase a digital version of the game, even if you already had it on 360 disk.
I may be mistaken....
