I used to have Microsoft Flight Sim years ago on a old Desktop.

I have just recently acquired a Dell precision desktop through work.

specs are

64gb ram
2 x intel xeon processors
NVidia k4000 graphics card
4 x 600 gb hard drives

what is the better flight sim out nowadays and would it be ok to run on that sort of spec?

MSFX is the current de rigeur, I think. For commercial aircraft anyway. There is a sale on steam until 25th Jan, it's going for a tenner.

Check out the specs - you might need to purchase a discreet video card to go in your system. It was released in 2006, so it might be ok on your rig.

If you have steam, near the bottom of the store page are 'games like this' where you can see IL 2 Sturmovik & X PLane 10 etc to see if any other flight sim catches your fancy. You might want to look at some kind of HOTAS stick if you're feeling serious about them though smile

If you like Modern stuff DCS World is worth a look, its on steam and is free (only get 2 planes on the free version).

It is made by the guys that did Lock-on years back.

Long since surpassed by Prepar3d.

Basically the underlying platform (which names escapes me at present) was sold to Lockheed Martin several years ago, with the caveat that it can't be used for 'entertainment purposes'. LM have continued to develop it to the point where it's now on it's third incarnation, but still shares a large degree of compatibility with FSX. It's been update a lot of Directx11 support, etc, but the over effect and realism is leaps and bounds over FSX, which is really showing it's age now. It's sold as a 'training aid' but is basically FSX done right.

FSX plus OrbX scenery is pretty good. I had to download the FSX Steam edition as my son had scratched my old discs, but it works fine on Windows 10 smile

I tried Xplane 10 but just didn't get along with it, felt like it was unfinished tbh! Tried various graphics settings but it always looked like something off a Mega Drive rather than the fantastic YouTube videos I'd seen.

I bought XPlane as there was a model of the Vulcan available for it, and that was good enough for me!

To get it 'youtube-sexy' you need to install loads of addons, stuff like Real Terra Haze etc ( http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?showtopic=7560...)

It is possible to get it looking photoreal, but it takes a lot of time spent tweaking.
