Kinect - other uses

Having had a original Kinect with the Xbox 360 which was used probably once to wave at something, I have recently seen that Microsoft released the tools to the public for them to do as they wish. 5 quid later, I have a separate power cable and connector from Amazon so that I can use it on the PC in the hope that I can get some head tracking for various racing and flight sims.

Has anyone done this before or know how it compares to something specialised like Track IR? It was a no brainier for the price of the adapter compared to Track IR and as a stop gap to possibly getting a VR headset.
