It depends on the type of game. If it's fps get a good mouse and keyboard, it's vastly superior.
xbox pad works as does the ps pad.
I have a steam controller, takes a bit of getting used to but I can see it being good if you can get used to it. Feels a bit plasticy in comparison to the usual suspects.
I think it really comes down to what feels good in the hand.

Yes, there are two available. The official Microsoft ones and the cheap copies, IME they both do the same job however the MS one is much easier to setup, just PnP.The copies need specific drivers and configuration and are a PITA to setup. They say X360 instead of Microsoft on them.
