Hi,

I've a Samsung S6 Edge on the way due to an insurance claim for my Samsung Note Edge which they cannot replace like for like due to availability.

I decided to order Gear VR just for a bit of fun.

Has anyone tried it yet and have any views? Appreciate it isn't the full gaming spec OR or Vive but looks like a bit of fun. Do headphones just plug in to the unit/phone?

Cheers

Hi Steve,

I have one and use my S7 to power it. Its a very impressive piece of kit and I was completely wowed with it. Its a great introduction into VR and definitely worth spending 70-80 quid just for the experience of it!

The novelty does however wear off pretty quick and I hardly use mine now. The games are as expected a bit limited and samey and I didn't really bother with that side of things much. What I did enjoy was the media side of things and the 360 videos.

I can also take 360 photos on my s7 (not sure on the s6 but Id imagine so) so I think I would mainly be using it for this in the future. Fantastic way of capturing precious memories and it really is like your there!

Let us know how you get on with it and what apps you find best. I haven't used mine in a few weeks so there are probably loads of new ones in the store now.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. I've played around with a google cardboard thingy which is surprisingly effective but, the VR Gear would be an affordable step up in immersion. Be interested to hear more opinions from those who've got one.

Howdee gents,

I have now used the Gear VR quite a bit. Easily worth the money and great fun just giving it a go.

Watching a youtube 360 degree video of scuba diving with sharks over a couple of wrecks was great. Looking at 360 degree photos is also great.

I have watched a "choice" video with it that really demonstrate "presence". Quite mind blowing really.

Regarding the 3d, it is like the 3d Imax experience that you actually want rather than normally receive but similarily once your eyes get tired (as they did when i was watching iMax star wars in 3d) i start to lose the 3d and the pictures go our of synch. That is the limitation of my eyes, I believe not the technology.

I am convinced it is worthy of purchase and like you say, I haven't really tried much in the gaming dept. I have bought minecraft but I didn't know I needed the additional bluetooth controller to use it, so haven't put it to the test.

On another note, the Samsung S6 Edge+ is a fantastic phone. Looks and build quality out of this world as well as the screen quality which on full brightness is another league entirely.

I will share any apps that I find worth using.

One thing I would say is "Milk VR" is an app that you can only download from the US Oculus website. I used a free VPN called Tunnelbear and downloaded it. Milk has access to loads of good 360 videos and can play anything else you have on your download folder on your phone.

Last point would be that you should use the device with good headphones as that massively uplifts the immersion level.

That is an initial download.

Cheers,
Steven
