So, after reading 'The Driver' by Gumball 3000 regular Alex Roy (a fantastic read btw) I recalled a previous-gen Need For Speed Game that was released after Hot Pursuit called 'The Run', which I guess is based loosely on the Gumball and has some crappy side story which I didnt pay much attention to.
Anyways, I went to my local Game & picked up a copy for a whopping 4.99 and what can I say, its actually really good fun!
If you can get past the stupid story, the dated graphics and small selection of cars, what you get is a fun game which would probably only take most players a few hours to complete, but for under a fiver you cant really complain can you? Each part of the United States that you drive across is well represented, and there's some 'quick-time' action sequences to break up the driving. Forza Horizon it is not, but with a bit of spit and polish I believe this game could have been fantastic..
Has anyone else here played The Run? Are there any other driving games you've re-visited years after it's released? Im now on the look out for a PS2 and a copy of Kaido Racer. Might look for Richard Burns Rally too while I'm at it

The Run was a weird one for me. The reviews all said the actual story mode is over in 2 hours or so and I could completely agree, and I only ever rented it (bought it long after the fact for PS3) and completed it then. But it was strange to have a game that was all about the experience rather than the actual gameplay. It had awful handling, atrocious story, and frustrating challenges (must have done that first escape from the gangsters a million times) but it was such a friggin' experience. The avalanche was one round, but there's where you hit 10th in the Run, and it's a race down the autumnal Pennsylvania hills with leaves blowing everywhere, like a touge fight. I think that's one of my favourite gaming moments, even if it wasn't a great driving game (the online was just awful) but what an experience.
The problem is the poor sods who paid £40 for it new. Buying it for £4.99? Fine value. If you paid ten times that, you'd expect a lot more, and I think that is the story of every NFS since Carbon, arguably.
