Xbox One or PS4 - Sorry in advance ! LOL
Discussion
Hi Guys,
My eldest is turning 14 and although he has not said for a while, I think he wants a new games console.
He has over the years had Ps2, wii and currently has PS3.
Some of his friends have Xbox, some have PS4.
We have not internet access at home.....well we do but it is as 0.3 m/b sec.......yes a 1/3 of a megabit!!!!
Questions:
1. Is it true that most/all Xbox games are to be downloaded, or are all of the them available on disc and you play as normal?
2. Which is better?

this is a pretty volatile question!
You're going to get answers in favour of both consoles. Some will argue that the framerate is mildly better on one or the colour depth on the other, or the memory speed across the alluvial fan has a higher cycle of xenon transfer between protons blah blah blah. But, ignore ALL of that as the ONLY driving factor should be what your kid's friends have: get the same as them, as then they can swap games, compare progress with each other etc., and if you ever get faster Internet they can play online together.
I personally prefer the XBOX. I originally bought it because of the Gears of War and Forza games (only available on XBOX). I've had both the XBOX 360 and now the XBOX one, and played plenty on the Playstation. I don't like the interface on the Playstation, prefer the exclusive games that Microsoft released, Kinect is really cool (whatever the Sony equivalent is called was (no idea if they improved it) utter utter rubbish), and the media/apps/TV integration is better.
All my opinion, but someone will be along shortly to tell you that my opinion is not worth a rotting turd because the Playstation has higher GPU cycles per flux capacitor when channeled through the warp drive blah blah blah

Also, the PS3 came out when you boy was 4. At what point was he playing the PS2?

Cant help you with the main question as i have neither console (PS3 still serving me well) but i will contribute this purely in the interest of trolling:

How so? im pretty sure the build quality on the X1 is better then the PS4, it is quieter as well.
t.]OP, if you play online, get what your friends have, if you dont, take a look at the exclusives for each platform and go by that.
Im very happy with my X1, Forza Motorsport is a platform seller to me, and the rest of the platform is nice as well imho
I've only had playstations as I prefer them over Microsoft. The games are similar on both machines, there are a few console specific ones. But I'd say get the one his better friends have, so he can trade games with them and if you actually get a half decent broadband in time, go online.

The PS4 Slim & Neo are supposedly to be announced on the 7th Sept, so probably wait for that as that will likely affect prices - even if you don't care about the updated specifications/features of the new iterations, there might be a drop on the outgoing PS4, and people wanting to upgrade selling off their old consoles.
Images of the slim are already out there, there is even video of it being booted up proving it's not a fake

There is now also an unboxing video of the final retail version - so it definitely looks pretty legit now.
I would wait a couple of weeks as the PS4 slim will affect prices and the Xbox one slim "cheaper" models are going on sale soon and will drive down original Xbox one prices.
I am an Xbox player, but both systems are pretty good. The absolute key question for you is which works better out of the box. To be honest both the consoles and the games rely heavily on patches and software updates. Virtually every game released now has multi-gigabyte patches that often fix major flaws and/or enable new modes etc.
If you do buy a console - could you take it to someones house temporarily - at least to get the latest OS?
I would *almost* recommend not buying one if you don't have internet access...you'll have to be quite careful about which games to get.
I've got both and I play my Xbox One more, but both are very good. I'd usually say that you should get whichever one your mates have, but with such a dire internet connection you might as well just toss a coin and decide on that as your Internet speed isn't good enough for gaming.
Both consoles rely on internet connection for download and updates. All games these days need patches and downloads to run as they are intended, as does the system broswer.

You need a good internet connection to use a PS4/XboxOne. Even when you first turn it on you have to install a big update online before you can use it.
If you aren't going to get at least a 20mbps connection its not worth buying one.
If you're still going to buy one anyway, its worth picking up the new Slim Xbox if you want Xbox or wait until October for the new Slim and Neo PS4.
If you're not getting internet and still want a console buy a Nintendo, NX is out early next year I think.

Blimey - I don't regard the PS4 as being massive in the first place, but that slim version makes it look huge! Won't be upgrading though, nothing wrong with the unit I have now - plays games at 1080p which is the resolution of the TV, don't use it for anything else
