So its either a bit like EA open access events to give you a sample of the game / multiplayer. Or it is a free game full stop - which you can play online for free over the weekend.

Pretty poorly explained by MS!

If its the former I would have thought they would have picked a more recent MP title to draw people in - BL2 is a pretty old title.

This isnt the first weekend they've done it. They also did it with BF4 a while ago.
