Which console for a 6 & 8 year olds?

I'm decades out of playing games.....but it appears the age old battle still continues.

Playstation vs Xbox

Which does father christmas get them for xmas? They've currently got a PS3 and all they play on it is Fifa and Minecraft. Although they've moaned about playing their friends online (which I have never set up for them).

Are they both the same these days in terms of game choice and online playing? Is one more 'trendy' than the other?
