What do you recommend, now I have returned to PC gaming with BeamNG, what is out there that has a bit more of a sim angle ?

Have seen Assetto Corsa and Automobilista on Steam, which is the better one and is there anything else ?

Tried Project Cars on the XBox one and didnt get on with it, not got Forza Horizon 3 yet but kind of got bored of that with the first two.

AC for me - have over 1,500 hours on it.

Very good, especially now it has the Porsche nod.

Project cars for visuals and more of a simcade experience.

Liveforspeed for free drifty and much loved physics

Rfactor2 for getting loads of content for free (of which quality is both extremes)

Assetto Corsa for visuals, realistic circuits and handling the comfy side of realistic.

iracing for if you want the online competition, realistic circuits, realistically modelled cars and handling the harsh side of realistic. iRacing you pay for your subscription and circuits/cars, it's the hardest to dip a toe into.

I am getting back into online racing after a while off.

Mainly use iRacing for online, best community and normally loads running in most races.
AC is ok but I find the physics a bit soft (if you see what I mean) more of a game than a full blow sim.

Does iRacing allow for different camera angles yet? I'm not interested in a chase cam but having the camera fixed 'in car' and having the dash take up >50% of the screen is frustrating in the extreme.

A bonnet or bumper cam makes loads more sense.

haha, no, it's a Sim.

You can change your FOV (field of view) to accommodate where you screen is compared to your wheel etc, this can help you to see more, but might break immersion when you're racing. Or you could race with a Rift like a lot of people do nowerdays

As an aside i've been doing GT3's at Brands this weekend, it's been carnage because brands isn't an often used circuit for GT3 (the most popular series in iracing). Also it's quite a tough track to race a fast gt3 as it wants to throw you off every corner, plus when your around other cars it multiplies the risk higher than other circuits, but it's been hilarious.

The Blancpain Sprint Series is 45m race with pit stop and max 27 on grid and the Blancpain Endurance Series is a 90minute team race with 60 cars on track (they're usually 3hrs)

Heres a sprint race from a decent uk streamer, he's got a lot of overlays on his twitch stream, but you can see how intense it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UT4XZdG6Gz0

My wife wouldn't dare do that near me if I was racing!

But it isn't real. It's a video game. One that sacrifices >50% of the screen in the name of pseudo realism. I'm all for hardcore realism (it's the only reason I play these things) but they have to accommodate for the limitations of medium.

If you have a wheel, you already have the sense of perspective from cockpit to road. For it to feel immersive you want your whole peripheral vison to be occupied by the game world - and a 2D screen cant recreate both the DOF and peripheral information your eyes can process (in the real world) So why fill it with needless information (i.e. the cabin)?!

It makes no sense to me. Assetto Corsa allows different camera angles but I don't think they've nailed the feeling of weight transfer. Project Cars gets this incredibly right - the 911's feel awesome - but the handling in Project Cars feels really off (it is my favourite so far, though).

I agree the in-car cam will work in VR (I had the DK2 for a short while) but for 2D screens (even my projector thrown onto an 8ft wide screen) it just doesn't work........... (for me ; )

I really struggled to get anywhere near the pack in PC's at Donington Park. Was terrible at it. Then went and done a track day (in real life), came back to the game a week later and won every race with ease. All same settings (I think 95% difficulty - all aids off)

Could not even tell you what I was doing differently!

In iRacing you can adjust the FOV as much as you like, but it only has "in car". If you want to push the FOV forward till you can't see the dashboard then you can.

But in the interest of realism, when you sit in your "real" car can you see the dash???
