Loved Commandos? Heads up!
Discussion
This is on Steam top sellers at the moment, but it may well have slipped under a lot of people's radar.
I know there's been a few games in the XCOM turn-based vein, but I don't remember seeing anything like Commandos for a while. I never played them when I was a kid, other than with a friend a few times, but I've since watched all of them being played right through.
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun came out the other day on Steam and GoG

It's an unashamed spiritual successor to Commandos, which I don't think is a particularly bad thing, there seems to be some of the humour too, but with a very cool different setting.
I just finished playing the demo (yes a demo in 2016
) and it's fantastic, the Steam rating so far speaks for itself. I didn't give in to buying it yet but I think my life over Xmas just disappeared!
Demo is available via the Steam page. It's time limited but I'm not sure how long; I played 2 hours, and the limit started counting down from 10 mins. Loading quicksaves (you will be doing that a lot
) resets it, so you could probably manage to finish the second mission. The first took me nearly an hour.

Was wondering if anyone was playing this.
Just finished the demo which is time limited rather than a specific subset of the game was a very positive experience. I think I played 2 hours, took me 1hr 36 to complete the first level and then probably another 30 mins in the second. So a generous slice of game.
If anyones interested is a real-time (but you can pause time and line up concurrent moves as well) small squad tactical game set in Feudal Japan I suggest you check it out.
I will definitely pick this up at some point either when it's cheaper or I have played through some of my backlog.

Looks interesting. I was very much into the Commando games, rather surprised nobody picked up the genre and exploited it better. I think they are asking a bit much for it though, that sort of money is competing with a lot of heavy hitters with more original content. Will watch for it on the Steam sales.
Loved Commandos back in the day. Downloaded the Shadow Tactics demo last night. Absolutely great so far, about an hour in. Just used 'shadow mode' to do three simultaneous silent kills for the first time...so satisfying!
Got all the video settings on minimum to prevent my Macbook Air having a meltdown, but that's par for the course.
Haven't got a gaming PC anymore so if they could find a neat way to do the UI on a tablet this would be my dream come true.

I agree, I like this style of game but I'm not paying £30 for something like that. I'll settle for playing Door Kickers on the tablet until it comes down hugely in price (£10-15.)I'm not so sure, yes it's a better proposition at 30 than 35, that is a touch steep I agree. They couldn't have launched at anything less than £25.
Sure there are bigger and more polished games at this price but what is there for it to compete with in the genre, and what does more original content mean? Every game within each genre is derivative of mechanics to a greater or lesser extent. This is a 20+ hour game before you get to the replayability.
This isn't a AAA game by definition, not that the term really means much, but I think we're used to spending this much and expecting 'something'. Despite how much s
t we have often been shovelled at launch by those games in recent years, we seem automatically to put down non AAA games that reach a certain pricing. I'm not saying it justifies the pricing, but isn't this refreshing in a way? It hasn't come out as a buggy mess, it recalls the type of game development that made the 90s classics so good.

Loved the demo.....bored, off work, so gave in and bought it this afternoon for 30 quid as an early xmas treat. Just looked up from the laptop and realised i'd been playing it for about 6hrs straight. Great game, happy with my purchase. From the 3rd mission onwards (which you won't see in the demo) they get way more complex than the first two and there are multiple routes to success and a lot of replay value.Gassing Station | Video Games | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
