So, my son completed his Christmas list at the weekend just gone and the thing he wants (PS4 VR) seems to be out of stock everywhere, except for cheeky chancers on Ebay.

Does anyone know anything more about the shortage and if there are going to be re-stocked?

Amazon are saying out of stock till after Xmas now. I did read that even CEX are paying more than the RRP for used units now.
Tbh I wouldn't get your pants pulled down by the rip of merchants on ebay. Even the Move controllers are double/triple the price at the moment due to shortages and they are really needed if you want the full VR experience.
In your position I would save the extra £150+ you will end up spending on the VR kit and upgrade to the Ps4 pro as it's a good enhancement for the VR kit. Get your name down on Amazon for the VR and Move controllers in the new year.

Why not just wait until after Christmas? Not ideal but if he knows he is getting it that will at least be a good start?

CEX will pay £328 cash, £360 voucher and sell for £450 https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SPS4PSVR001

Thank you for your replies and kapiteinlangzaam, that was a very kind offer. It gives a warm fuzzy feeling when humans are prepared to go the extra mile to help other humans smile

I think I found one, ordered it yesterday on a place called Shop To. I had never heard of them before. The reviews make it look legit, hoping it wasn't a rip off, but have used paypal to be safe.

Shopto are pretty good, have bought games off them a few times and they know their stuff.

Can't help with the VR kit, but no worries using Shopto. I use them all the time and are very reliable for pre-orders arriving on day of release

Wow I've been looking for a PSVR for weeks. I thought Shopto were also out of stock at least that's what the website has been showing for weeks. How did you order it?

Hope he's 12 or older. Apparently it can damage your ability to judge distances if used for extended periods of time any younger than 12.

Pain in the backside as I only found out after purchasing it for my kids, ages 5 and 13.

This sounded a bit like scaremongering (they haven't been out long enough to cause any harm yet, even if they are harmful), so a quick google found some nice summaries of discussions where experts have given statements discussing theoretical harm if used for long periods, based on the screens being so close to the eyes (similar to using a phone or tablet for extended periods). However, also some further discussion which seemed to dispute that due to the way VR has you focus beyond where the screen is.

Summaries given everywhere I've seen are the usual for all new technologies: we don't know for sure, so be careful with children, but there's no evidence to say that this should be any more harmful for a child than an adult when used sensibly. The manufacturer age ratings will be based on them playing it safe until the technology has been around long enough to judge it accurately.

They do turn up from time to time but seem to disappear just as quickly. You need to keep an eye on some of the online stock checker sites. Just do a search for PSVR stock check.

Agreed that there's no 100% certainty about it but I for one won't be taking the risk with my youngest unless it's proven otherwise.

It takes an adults eyes a while to adjust to it and there can sometimes be a bit of an odd sensation after using VR for a bit, better to err on the side of caution I'd say.
