So judging by the lack of a thread I take it no one has been playing the Dawn of War III beta this weekend. The classic Warhammer 40k RTS is almost here so I'm surprised more fans haven't picked up on this.

For the beta you basically get 3 tutorial levels then a chance to play a multiplayer match as one of the 3 races, Space Marine, Eldar or Orc.

First impressions are that the graphics are great and it basically seems to be an updated version of the original DoW which is good news for series fans as the second game wasn't as good. The beta doesn't have any campaign content but the MP definitely has base building and upgrade tech trees as well as heroes.

My only concern was that I played quiet a few matches of 1v1 over the weekend which is on one map and most games seem to be won or lost in the first 5 minutes with very little scope to turn the game around if you loose the first resource grab phase.

Still it's released in a few days and I'm still very much looking forward to playing through the campaign.

I wasn't that enamored at first either but it definitely grows on you and I can see the full game being quite a time sink plus we haven't seen any of the campaign yet.

What didn't you like about it? I thought it was a decent combination of 1 and 2.

Is there base building?

I'm guessing not

Yes there is, at least in the multiplayer and it looks like there will be in the campaign too plus tech upgrades etc. It definitely looks like they've taken some of the criticisms of DoW 2 on board so you have base building, capture points etc of DoW but you also get the hero units of DoW 2.

It's out in a couple of days so reviews are out already e.g.

It's getting pretty good scores so far.
