How do I convert a (real) car seat in to something suitable for a gaming rig? And what kind of seat do I need?

Looking for Sparco/Recaro/Corbeau/Bride..

I want to use it in conjunction with a Logitech G920 and gated shifter, stainless steel pedals and wheelstandpro.

I'm not interested in buying a playseat as I have a wheelstand pro.

I will be using it for DIRT Rally.

What seats are readily available under £60 that I can use from the above brand? I have seen seats from an Impreza Turbo 2000

What parts do I need? How much will it cost?

I guess if you have the time and fabrication skills anything is possible.

[Was about to post this in your thread in GG but it was closed when I hit submit]

I read your other (moved) post and I see what you are looking for, at first I assumed you where one of those green oval wierdos who put racing seats in their defenders when you said they weren't for road or track use. biggrin

Anywho since my thread is active on a similar subject, have you considered MX5 tombstone seats? They are really comfy, adjustable, don't have a super aggresive bolster and are available as leather or cloth, the downside being they weigh a ton so a lot of mx5 owners swap them out, which means they are very cheap, you can pick one up on eBay for ~£50 (with £10-20 shipping), there are also a lot of MX5s at breakers you could raid.

As for the bits you need, I assume you will need to custom fabricate a small frame, any grade tubular steel would do with 4 holes lined up to pop the seat rail in & a bracket for the wheel/pedals.

Finally, a helpful post!
Thank you very much.

Since no one seems to be on racing sims on here I cross posted this on GG to get replies but it got removed. Oh well.

Those tombstone seats look nice! I am going to have a little mooch on ebay...

Thanks again smile

Haha I know that feeling, I asked a similar question an hour or so ago, just a general question about what cars come with the lightest OEM seats as I wanted a lighter used set for my MX5... it got moved to the Mazda forum almost immediately, I had to repost it, just as you did, with all mention of the intended purpose removed. Mods can be a bit overzealous but you can't really blame them if they are trying to deal with stuff quickly without fully reading it.

I'd offer you one of my seats but when I take them out of the 5 they are going into my 4x4 to get rid of the hidious multicoloured patterned cloth seats currently in that.

I'd love to offer you more advice myself, I love my racing sims but being a skint student I have neither the funds or the space in my flat for a good setup, currently I just hook my Logitech DFGT onto my desk.

... Yeah "Racing Sims"

No problem, it is bloody horrible to be fair. I use the black one that came with. Mine is leather(-ish) but I use cushions to minimise the sweaty arse effect during long sessions lol smile

I use a Thrustmaster T500rs but as I've mentioned in other threads I'm up to 4 wheels now...

I started with a dfgt around 2011-2, then 3 months later game had the G27 on sale so I upgraded...served me well until 18months ago I picked up the T500. I've since got a G29 to use on PS4 which I rarely use.

I've been racing a few years and my kit has expanded quite a bit in the last 18months...

Once you get started it's a slippery slope...

Seems that you have ps4... what games do you use? I can't see GT Sport coming out soon enough sadly.. as I have a PS4 just waiting to be used properly!

I got the PS4 in anticipation of the new GT release as I did previously with PS3 when GT5 was about essentially because it was the game that got me hooked (although I'm a petrolhead first and gamer second so I only play racing/driving games). I bought Project Cars for it, but the PC version trumps PS4 with triple screens and the Oculus Rift so to be honest I barely use it, I toyed with the idea of getting Assetto Corsa but I know I'd be disappointed after PC for the same reasons as Project Cars plus the community mods/content. I've got the GT Sport closed Beta access and it's alright I suppose, I go on every few days and give it another go but it's not on the same level handling wise as Project Cars or Assetto Corsa. Those 2 games for circuit racing and Dirt Rally have seriously raised the level of racing games over the last couple of years and I don't know whether GT Sport can step up enough to attract me back to PS4 regularly given the amount of money I've invested in my PC rig.

I got Star Wars Battlefront because "Star Wars" but I've hardly played it, just cba with FPS games, everybody is just bouncing around like they're on pogo sticks nowadays...you need insane reactions to stay alive more than 5 seconds (well I do anyway).

What about dirt 4, coming out in less than 3 weeks, ive got about 400 hours on dirt rally but this looks like a upgrade on that. i've got a old g25 for pc and a tmx for xbox although i tend to play on pc now. After watching many you tube vids on dirt 4 i just cant wait for it to land.

I have converted a real car seat onto my Obutto rig so I have a spare seat going if you're interested? £0, free pickup in West London. It's got runners for moving fore and aft built in and look like this:

After trawling ebay for weeks I ended up finding a seat from an Audi A7 for not a lot of money. To mate it onto the rig I ordered some steel plates of the correct size from these guys for I think £12 delivered!

https://www.lasermaster.co.uk/easy-order

I just drilled holes for the runners on the seat and the rig and bolted it up. Tricks for young players include the fact that the runners on the seat aren't mounted centrally on the seat base and they aren't even mounted parallel to the direction the seat is facing!

Being a 12 way adjustable seat I also had to power the electrics. The seat came with four separate looms built in (movement, sensors, heating and airbag) and I couldn't find a manual with any details of what each did and which wire was which. And I didn't really want to set the airbag off. I ended up tracing out the movement loom and bought a cheap 12V 10A power supply from Amazon to power it. And it works!!

And it looks good and is pretty damn comfy too.

Great work, the problem with most sim setup seats is they look good but are pretty uncomfortable for long sessions (made down to a price point).

I may have to consider something like this with my grumbling back...

Thanks. biggrin

The original Obutto seat (without the base) is just going in the skip if nobody wants it. Happy to hang onto it for a couple of weeks.

seefarr....i'd love that seat if its still around...depends quite where you are obviously (I am in Essex)
Black would be a great replacement for the grey (and uncomfortable) Fiesta seat i have on my rig (well, few bits of wood nailed together!)

I couldnt see a way to contact you directly, so replied to this thread
