I'm not saying I'm going to do this. But. Say you had a spare 2nd bedroom. And you were contemplating a gaming setup that would allow you to play driving sims (e.g. iracing), with a proper seat, pedals and wheel. As well as use it for the odd FPS. What could be done with a modest budget e.g. <£2k?

I'm thinking PC because I can't get to grips with controllers for FPS. Just no accuracy compared to a mouse.

Technical skill level...haven't built a PC for 10 years and never had much idea about graphics cards anyway.

Like I say...just pondering...

If you're thinking iRacing or Assetto Corsa, budget £400 for an Oculus Rift.

So partially depends if you want to go screen or VR tbh, either way i'd say you'd be looking at a GTX 1070 for a card which is £400 i think

If you get a good monitor or even 3 1080p for a cockpit style again similar price yet again for this, or VR costs this or more

Actual system of i7, mobo and ram and bit's i'd say budget £5-600 quid for the components accounting for an SSD as well or more depending on parts. Then case and PSU and such you would want decent parts for

Decent steering wheel is £200 for this, and for chair that can cost as well

I'd say 2k may be a little tight myself but i like to have good components, i hate to think how much i have spend on my PC. I have a steering wheel and office gaming chair myself and it works well for me, but i will say i'd like a VR for project cars and other bits too

If I went down the VR route then I guess I'd just want the one monitor rather than 3. So that's a saving right... hehe

But try one first as they aren't for everyone.

If you look around lots of people go out and chuck piles of cash into sim racing, buying shed loads of expensive kit. Some of them decide they don't like it or love it and quickly start upgrading, so there are lots of sim racing buy/sell/exchange pages on FB , then there is gumtree and eBay too...

My wheel and seating rig were bought second hand, obviously you have to be a bit more careful than buying new.

It's an area where you really do get what you pay for. That said the g29 is a good wheel to start out and can be had for under £200, a full seating rig is less than £500, look at this https://sim-lab.eu because although it looks st these guys are testing a prototype motion system which will bolt to their rigs and it's tipped to be the cheapest on the market when they start selling it (I've seen a video posted by one of the testers). £1300 budget for a PC will get you a good gaming rig (don't fall for the 4K gaming hype). If using a single screen bigger is better obviously, I ran with 3x24" screens which were less than £100 each new before getting my Oculus Rift, and I'd say peripheral vision is so important in racing games. If you can get on with VR it's fantastic, but the motion sickness problem is real. My mum couldn't cope with it at all when I stuck it in her head, she was fine just looking at stuff but I stuck her in a car on Brands Hatch and after a couple of laps she felt awful.

Google is your friend, there are a lot of options for all of this kit, so if you see something interesting post it here and we can discuss it. This will honestly come down to what you like the look of versus how much you want to spend.

Treat it like an ongoing project car build, if you get hooked you'll end up upgrading bits here and there all the time. It's a great hobby and it's made me a much better track driver IRL.
