Just discovered Far Cry 3 - Tips?
Discussion
I just picked up Far Cry 3 from one of those game exchange shops and I'm totally hooked! It feels I have finally found something to replace Skyrim as my go-to game.
I have some initial questions though-
1) Is there a method to take over the bases? I have taken a couple of bases but now I have one filled with snipers and as soon as I take out 1 bad guy, they wipe me out.
2) How can I kill a shark? I need shark skins for crafting. I have seen sharks swimming near the coast but my AK and Sniper rifle don't seem to do any damage.
3) Is there an easy way to kill packs of dogs? If I get attacked, it seems to require all my ammo to take them out. This also reveals my position to the enemy.
4) When I loot crates, I gather a load of items like poker chips, faded photos, drugs etc. Do I need to keep any of these or are they all useless?
Any tips would be appreciated.

2. Use a knife or a bow and arrow
3. Grenades
4. Sell them at the stores in the villages
It's been a while since I've played FC3 - might have to fire it up again now.
Thanks - my new silenced MP5 is a bit more stealthy than my AK47!
I've also skinned enough sharks to make what I need. I used the old "wade into the shallows and use yourself as bait" trick before finishing them with the bow.
Whats the best way to earn cash in this game? It seems like I spend as much on ammo that I make in loot, so I'm alway poor!

It’s been a while, but I don’t recall running out of ammo... How are you approaching things? A bit spray and pray? I've also skinned enough sharks to make what I need. I used the old "wade into the shallows and use yourself as bait" trick before finishing them with the bow.

My tip - run around doing all of the radio towers first. It’ll give you access to the guns without having to pay for them, which allows you to spend cash on ammo, etc. instead. My play style is always to get a silenced sniper rifle ASAP. Much easier to kill off everyone in the bases from a distance, if you can find the right place to shoot from.

Just scavenge every crate/box/dead body you come across and skin every dead animal - sell everything in the village shop (or I seem to remember you could do it from your base locations too).I've also skinned enough sharks to make what I need. Agree with that, a silenced sniper rifle is the best investment. Pick off as many enemies as possible from afar with out them setting off the alarms, then move in with automatic weapons to disable the alarms and finish off the rest.
If you set the alarms off just run off, you will use a lot of ammo defending yourself and will probably lose.
I seem to recall being poor early in the game, but if you expand your loot bag as much as possible you pick up a lot of items to sell from dead enemies

Aye the best loadout I found was the best silenced sniper rifle I could get, the bow and arrow and the lever action shotgun for close range. I like stealth.
The silenced 50 cal you can get is incredibly op, even in the end game.
The best thing to do at the beginning is work on getting your equipment upgraded. Also when you're levelling up pick a path and stick to it. If you want to be a heavy machine gun tank focus on skills for that, if you want to play stealthy then focus on that.
It's a great game. One of they few I've even got close to 100% completing before I got bored
.
When it comes to taking down the bases, use your camera to mark enemies and plan a strategy before you start. I think you can use Sniper scopes to mark enemies as well but I'm not sure, it's been a while since I played it.

Top tips!
I like the idea of getting free guns by taking the radio masts. My biggest problem is moving around the map into unexplored territory. If I try to drive to the new location, the pirates chase me in their cars or shoot from checkpoints. If I try to sneak through the forrest, I inevitably get eaten by Tigers or Monitor Lizzards.
On top of taking radio masts/bases is there a main story line to follow? I keep getting a pop-up about talking to someone about a mushroom quest(?) but I'm ignoring it for now as I like exploring.

There is a storyline - you can do it alone or you can do the many side-quests as well.I like the idea of getting free guns by taking the radio masts. Hiding in the bushes with the insta kill melee attack was quite good for trying to thin out chasing bad guys. Also why I had a shotgun as a last gasp, you don't even really have to aim, just start blasting and you'll clear some room if you get surrounded
.
The main problem with stealth is if you caught the attention of the big heavy guys before you were ready. If they start on you before you can hit them you're done.

I played 2 and 4 and echo the above. Bow and arrow are my favourite weapons, jumping from a moving car is a good attack (set up to ram a check point, jump out, let the car do the work and tidy up the stragglers), if in doubt, run away, when you come back npc usually revert to roaming. For bases, look for gas tanks or caged animals, blow these/ release as a distraction.
As others have said, stealth is key to taking bases in Far Cry games.
You can go in all guns blazing with an unsilenced assault rifle, but you'll probably just waste a lot of ammo and end up dead. You want to clear out the bases from as far away as possible with a silenced sniper rifle or a bow and then clear up the remaining few guards with a shorter range silenced weapon.
Look for animal cages in the bases too, shoot the cage with a silenced sniper and then watch the mayhem unfold.
Far Cry 3 is a great game, but I can imagine it being very frustrating and progress very slow if you approach it as a "spray and pray" FPS game. Think of it more of a stealth game with the option to go loud if (when...) things go wrong.

I remember one base that I was scoping out using the camera to locate the bad guys... All of a sudden. 2 Tigers wandered in to the compound and quickly dispatched all the bad guys. As soon as the base was liberated and my friends arrived, the Tigers vanished.
As mentioned, I can confirm that the (always unsilenced) AK47 is NOT a good weapon for this game!

If you think that wolves are annoying wait until you discover honey badgers in far cry 4 (a much better game imo), the noise that they make still haunts me
Thumbs up for second hand bargains, I buy a £10ish one almost every month on eBay now. Had some awesome games that I missed out on first time around

Silenced sniper rifle, shoot the alarms around the bases then start picking people off.
Some bases have caged animals in them, shoot the cages and let the animals out.
I took most bases this way, minimal intrusion, save the more brutal kills for when you come across random enemies on the roads.

I still like this game!
I have started the main quests now but I find they are a bit linear. Just run to the next orange place marker - repeat. This does build my cash up faster then exploring though.
Regarding exploring the map - some of those bases are still difficult to take. I can always pick off about 3 guys with a long range silcenced weapon but one of the killings tends to get noticed then they charge in and I waste my ammo defending myself. Taking a base costs me more ammo than I can buy with the resulting loot. The radio masts are a lot easier to take as they tend not to be defended.

Just a heads up if you feel like you're going to try the next one - Far Cry 4 is more or less the same mechanics just cleaned up (the syringes menu is a hell of a lot easier to navigate). You may not feel you're playing much of a different game gameplay wise. You'll certainly not as feel attached to Ajjay as you do to Jason, the character focus isn't on him - and I feel that's why it got slated in reviews.
The focus is much more on the world itself, the country. If you enjoyed just wandering through the wilderness in FC3 you'll probably enjoy Kyrat much more. The music is better, the environment is prettier (especially on a better console if you have one) and the actual struggle well... I won't spoil it, but people from Bhutan and other nations around that area have said it hits home very hard. FC4 got a bit of a slamming in the press because it wasn't about the protagonist as much as he was in the world that was the focus, when it was a draw of FC3. But I'll let that be a choice of yours!
