I’m not into this but my son is. He had a laptop for Christmas and wants this for windows 10. Which version do I buy? I see on the MS store it’s £22.95 and in minecraft.net its £17.95. Are these the same?

The one on minecraft.net says it’s for Java?

I think there is a specific edition for Windows 10 which is probably better optimised to it. The original version certainly is Java based. Sure I read somewhere though that you can get a free upgrade from the Java version to the Win 10 one, I would Google it but all gaming sites are blocked for me at work.

Got this on the PS4 for my son for Christmas and I've started playing it myself a bit to help him get to grips with it. Quite a complicated thing.

So far as I know, Java edition is the original (certainly the one I know) the others are a unified version of the mobile / tablet OS editions. I would go with Java as it is moddable and Minecraft vanilla always seems so limited in comparison. I guess it depends how old your son is and what version his friends have.

If the Win10 version isn't moddable, stick with the Java one. My daughter barely ever plays vanilla Minecraft these days unless with her mates/on private servers.

IIRC Java is for cross-platform playability. I have the Windows 10 version on mine and both the kids computers. The only online play we do is amongst ourselves. At 8 and 6 I feel it is a little early for them to be out in the big bad world of public-server online gaming.
