A bit late to the party........

Hi All
I haven't been in to gaming for the last 20+ years, I used to love Colin McRae rally on PC and my absolute favorite was Duke Nukem 3D!
That's how up to date I am, I kid you not!
My son has just acquired an X Box One S (Mine-craft special edition apparently) and it got me thinking, what games might I like when he's reluctantly sent off to bed?
I fancy a "shoot 'em up" type game and I'm so out of touch I don't know what (or where) to start.
I appreciate it's a bit "how long is a piece of string" but any advice gratefully received.
TIA

Given your comment about Duke Nukem, the two that come to mind are the most recent Doom (2016) and Wolfenstein II - The New Colossus. I have Doom on the PS4 and it's a great game. I've not played Wolfenstein II as I haven't had a chance, but i played Wolfenstein - The New Order released in 2014 and ended up completing it a few times over, which is unusual for me these days.

So after a bit of trawling a well known online auction site I've bought this:

Thanks for the advice, hopefully the first of many.
Good choice; New Order (+ the Old Blood DLC) is the closest thing to old-school run and shooters - it is tremendous fun. 2016's DOOM is also a worthy contender but it has a skill tree which some annoys purists. The Far Cry games are also a good shout, but they too have a lot of bolted on "progression tools" such as skill trees and crafting - fine if you can get your head around those things. Thanks for the advice, hopefully the first of many.

When you're ready to go online I'd recommend PlayerUnknown's Battle Grounds - although I'm not sure how much the xbox version has improved since launch; it was a little janky on release day.
I love the Battlefield series on Xbox - just amazing. There's even a WW1 variant, Battlefield 1 which is amazing.
However I am now totally addicted to Grant Theft Auto V and playing it online - the scale and scope of the thing is simply incredible; it's another world. You can go round shooting police, buying clothes and getting haircuts (playing as a female is better for this), buying cars, racing other players, blowing up other players, flying planes, parachuting, sailing, jetskiing blah blah. It's ace!

Since you've not been into gaming for the past 20 years i'd recommend catching up on some of what you've missed. If you're into first person shooters, you could do a lot worse than playing the gold standard of FPS and picking up a copy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. This has Halo 1, 2, 3, and 4 all rolled into one package, and you can pick it up used for about £20 quid. Can't say no to four amazing games at £5 each!
