Cheap Alternative to Wheel Stand
Discussion
Hi guys, I’ve just bought a Logitech G29 and I love it! The only problem is I have no wheel stand, so my first experience of a proper wheel (think my last one was a Madcatz wheel on ps2!) was with the wheel resting on 2 cushions on my knees, not ideal.
Been investigating wheel stands and they’re very pricey, after buying the wheel Mrs DanB doesn’t want me blowing big money on a playseat or wheelstand Pro. So what should I do?
I’m not the most practically minded person, so building my own isn’t ideal, but if I could get some sort of tall coffee table so I can sit on the sofa with it will have to do. Any Suggestions? I also need somewhere to mount the shifter, right now it’s sat in the box as it doesn’t like being wedged between the arm of the sofa and my left leg. Any solutions greatly appreciated!

this is only £56 http://amzn.to/2BwD9Xf.
You really need a stable and solid mounting option to get any enjoyment from a wheel and shifter.

I get that you don't want to spend much on something to mount the wheel on after shelling out for the wheel, in which case the stand mentioned above may well be your solution, however, I thought I'd post the following as a (obviously more expensive) possible alternative. In either case, I reckon you'd be better going for something specifically made to mount the wheel rather than trying to cobble together a solution.
I also recently got a G29 wheel, pedals and shifter (Curry's offer for £150).
I tried clamping it to coffee tables using it on the sofa, and even clamped some hardboard to the dining table trying to get the pedals not to slide around by putting them next to the cross brace on the table. I also managed to clamp the shifter to the board as well, but quickly found that the solution was always a compromise, was uncomfortable, the pedals kept moving, were the wrong distance away, and the shifter kept coming loose.
In the end, I came to the conclusion that I needed something better.
Trouble is that most of the playseats seemed to take up a lot of space, and were quite expensive.
In the end I went for the Playseat Challenge which although not very cheap, isn't too bad at £160. It also folds up quickly with the wheel, pedals (and now shifter) still attached, so easy and quick to set up again. Depending on your room layout, you could well stash it behind a sofa or in the cupboard under the stairs.
In use it's great - easy to adjust and comfortable. Pedals and wheel attach firmly, so don't move. The wheel is very solid as it actually bolts to the support rather than just clamping on.
Only issue was that it didn't come with a shifter mount. You can get one that mounts next to the wheel, but when checking out potential ways to mount the shifter, I came across this article by a guy who made a bracket to mount it to the side of the seat. I managed to knock something up out of a couple of bits of wood using the motorcycle mirror mounts and some 10mm bolts he mentions and it works really well.
I think that unless you go for something like this, you'll not get anywhere near the best out of the wheel, which would be a shame, as it's a really good wheel for the price.
