Upgrading to OneX and 4k TV - options?
Discussion
Morning All,
I've had my Xbox One for many years, and currently play on a 40" Sony wd905 TV (a great set at the time). Currently i only really play Battefield1, Forza and occasionally RocketLeague or a bit of GTA.
I've no doubt i'll buy Battlefield V when it comes out soon, and keep thinking now might be a good time to upgrade to 4k gaming?
Anyone done this recently and regretted it in terms of cost vs benefit?
If I did upgrade, what am i looking for in terms of a TV... from my research it needs to be:
- Low lag
- 4k
- HDR10 or HDR10+ ??
When reading manufacturers info they all seem to have a gaming mode, however some online review then point out that the gaming mode disables HDR which is a feature of the Xbox OneX?
TV budget would be around £700-800 and ideally 49" or similar size. I have it set up in a games room so it doesn't need to do anything other than play games very well, so any suggestions would be very welcome!

If you can still get your hands on last years Panasonic TX-50EX750B you should be able to pick one up for just over £700. It supports HDR 10 and Panasonic are still saying that HDR 10+ will be available in an a future update (although they have been saying that for a while now)I've had my Xbox One for many years, and currently play on a 40" Sony wd905 TV (a great set at the time). It gives low lag, 4k, HDR 10 and comes in right on budget. Review link below:-

Samsung MU7000 was recommended by AVForums on their review for gaming purposes, and should be around that mark in 55 inch flavour. Much smaller than that and you'll need to sit really close to make 4K even perceptible.
Specs look right but it seems this is an older model now and harder to get hold of. Currently i'm sitting only around 4 feet from the screen and would like to sit around 6 feet away so I think 55" would be the absolute max.

I sit 5ft from my 65" TV. 4K gaming through Shield looks lovely and it's amazing how quickly you adapt to being that close. But if you can adjust, 55" is point that most manufacturers start putting in their better processing, motion handling features etc.Currently i'm sitting only around 4 feet from the screen and would like to sit around 6 feet away so I think 55" would be the absolute max.
You're absolutely right. Honestly I'm not as au fait with the most recent models to hit the shelves - the reviews from the latest mid and lower range offerings are slower than the latest and greatest OLED's etc. But 55" is the sweet spot - even in the same model ranges (i.e. 49NU8000 vs 55NU8000) it's common for manufacturers to use lower end panels - or even different types of panels - in the smaller model.
I’d certainly upgrade your television; I’ve just done exactly that myself! I opted for a Panasonic 65” 4K panel, which is rather stunning.
My only problem is upgrading to the XBox One X - It’s a good £400 or so, but how long will it last? By that I mean, Sony has announced a new console for around 2020/2021, so Microsoft are sure to follow suit. That means £400 now, and another £400 in 2-3 years time. I think I might just wait it out ... or at least see what the Christmas sales bring!

Ok if you had to choose between a 55” LG oled B7
Or a new Samsung 55” qled Q6FN
What would it be? I’m straying towards the oled!
For 4K HDR films and high quality TV content: B7Or a new Samsung 55” qled Q6FN

For gaming: Q6FN.
The low input lag and high peak brightness (1500 nits?) of the Samsung sounds quite useful for HDR gaming. But for better blacks and higher contrast ratio the B7 wins.
There's some (hotly debated) talk of OLED's suffering from screen burn, which may be a concern for gaming. I don't know enough about it to comment though.
Just a warning, buy a TV that you know has specifically been used with an Xbox One X with the game you want to play in HDR.
I have read posts in gaming forums that some TVs quoted as HDR10 aren't fully compatible with the HDR coded into the games (this was specifically Forza 7).
There do seem to be variations on the processing and some combinations aren't compatible.

Playing my XB1X through a 49" Q7C here and Forza7 & FH3 both run just fine and look stunning in HDRI have read posts in gaming forums that some TVs quoted as HDR10 aren't fully compatible with the HDR coded into the games (this was specifically Forza 7).

Went back and bought the B7 OLED in the end. I generally run both my tv watching and xbox on quite dim settings as i get headaches easily and the picture did look slightly better on dim settings in store.
Just setting it all up this afternoon and looking forward to some games later!
p.s. Man maths ruled this one, along with Lloyds credit cards offering 0% for 24 months with no fees which helps spread it out a bit!

Just to chime in, Game Mode on most TV's, especially Samsung, greatly reduces the input lag for gaming, but at the cost of reduced picture quality. I found this out when spending half a day fine-tuning my Samsung UE49MU6400 specifically for gaming on my Xbox One X. The difference in picture quality was night and day when roaming around in Destiny 2.
The secret is to manually change the HDMI input into PC mode then just rename it manually to Xbox. This actually gives you in most cases an even better input lag than game mode plus the colour and picture appears flawless and requires minimal fine tuning with the picture settings.
