Hi all,

I have just purchased an XB1 with both Forza's (7 and Horizon 4) and RDR2 for a small bargain price.

I haven't played xbox or anything for that matter since I was at college about 7 years ago haha.

I used to have a trusty turtlebeach headset which was cheap but always did the job.

I'm just trying to find out what you boys use and recommend?

So far I've seen;

Turtle beach (£50-100) depending on whether to get the wireless model or not. Any good or a pain?

Hyper X Cloud 2 which seem to get very good reviews. Apparently you just plug the cable into the controller? So it's effectively wireless? Mind = blown.

Can anyone confirm, say I'm watching a film through Netflix on the Xbox... could I unplug the headset from the controller for obvious reasons and still hear.. right? It's just for the mic I assume?

Any advice well received. budget is around £50-£100 or slightly more but probably won't be able to use it very often so meh!

Thanks smile

From my experience, avoid Turtle Beach like the plague. They all seem to have the same faults with the cable and microphone. Both my sons and daughters started giving problems after only a couple of months, lots of their friends are on their second or third headsets.

I bought a cheap one from an amazon prime deal which works well but the ear pads are a little small for prolonged use.

Can’t advise which to buy, only what to avoid!!

Thanks bud.

I must admit most the reviews do seem positive on Turtlebeaches but I'm keeping my options open!

I've seen this Hyper X 2 thing: https://www.clasohlson.com/uk/Kingston-HyperX-Clou...

Which seems to be very good value.

Only thing is I don't think you can adjust the volume or voice chat on the actual lead to the controller on the Xbox One. Which is putting me off a bit.

My son swears by (and into!) his Hyper X for the PC.. seems very well made. Agree the Turtle Beach ones look a bit flimsy by comparison. I might try a cheapo one for my new One X as I don't use a headset much. I think the newer pads have a regular headphone jack so you can plug straight in.

another -1 for Turtle Beach from me.

The products seem OK but when they go wrong their support is awful.

I have some Elite 800Xs and they just stopped working one day. Took me months to get them to take them back after constantly being directed to the troubleshooting pages.

When they did send them back (no idea where) I had to chase them after two weeks and then again a week after and eventually a pair just turned up on my door without explanation.

These weren't the same pair though and clearly not new. After some digging it turns out they were a second hand pair from CEX with a 3 month guarantee. After royally kicking off they replaced with new.

At the end of November Lucid Sounds release the LS35Xs, specifically made for the X, that connect like a controller to the xbox with no wires or a digital receiver. Plan to go for them and never look back. Around £200 though.

They are a great brand though with very good sound quality so I'd say don't discount something like the LS30s.

I've also had Astros in the past and they were very good, and I still have a cheap pair of Trittons I just use as a backup and I needed a replacement quickly. They don't get used much and the sound quality isn't great but they're cheap and haven't let me down.

There's a few good youtube channels with reviews. Start Replay is a decent one that directly compares competing sets. I'd watch as many reviews as you can as it's not something you can go to a shop with and try a few out.

Thanks so far chaps.

Can anyone confirm what the Hyper X's are like for watching films?

I assume the TV volume can be 0 and you can listen through the headphones, and they obviously then don't need to be plugged into the controller? Does that work?

Cheers.

The cheap Turtle Beach stuff is predictably...cheap. The more expensive items are very good and very sturdy.

I've used a set of Turtle Beach XO Four headphones for years now. They're very comfortable, have excellent sound quality and have given me literally thousands of hours of use. I prefer wired headphones because of the reliability of plug and play connection (no battery issues or interference). The headphones connect to a mixer that plugs into the pad, which allows you to balance chat and game volumes. That is very handy.

My recommendation is to go with something that can revert to a cabled connection if needed.

Even the expensive turtle beach headphones are shockingly bad.

I have a 500X headset. £200 at the time. Stress cracks everywhere, there's more superglue holding the headband together than the plastic it's made from, the surround sound it was bought for doesn't work without an audio delay of about 0.2 of a second, so that's switched off. The creak and grown when you have the audacity to move your head slightly and the battery will only last about 5 hours.

Guys, thanks for all the recommendations.

You have swayed me from turtle's and yesterday I bought some HyperX Cloud Alpha's - which are basically the newer version of HyperX Cloud 2's.

They are in gold and have the inline controls, something I wanted really. Wired to the controller - to me, that's basically wireless haha! I tried them out last night and I am well impressed.

Cost me £90. Thanks

Anybody else having headphone problems with the One controllers? We have two controllers, one won't work with headphones at all, and the other one is intermittent. Been through all the online troubleshooting, the controllers don't detect when they are plugged in, come to the conclusion that our kids fairly rough treatment of the controllers (dropped onto wooden floor) has knackered them, we're not alone locally, if there's a multiplayer game going on the kids usually facetime each other to stay in touch.

It's my personal opinion to get something wired as you won't have the issue that wireless ones have of losing charge after a couple of years.

i have a pair of wired astro a40s (for my PS4), had them for at least 4 years now and they're faultless.
