Hi Everybodies!

I used to be a big gaming fan back in the days of the PS1 (I had one the day they came out, took some saving up but it was mind blowing!).Since then, life has taken over and I rarely had chance to do any gaming, with other hobbies and life interests taking my time. However, looking at some games and reviews recently on Youtube and I would like to experience some of the newer stuff - but I don't know much about the new world of gaming so wondered if you could help please?

I really liked my PS1 (and to a lesser degree my PS2, which I didn't play much), but specifically I like the controllers and the brand, so prefer the PS4 pro superficially to Xbox. I also really like the styling of the PS4 (smaller, neater).

I'm not fussed about doing online gaming - I don't have time to get immersed into a world to that extent - plus I am very reluctant to take on more subscription based services. I just want to pick up and play, for the most part.

I like arcade racing games (dislike F1 sims) as well as games that can be "pick-up-and-play". I also like some adventure games (my references are old games but to give you an idea - Final Fantasy 7, Beneath a Steel Sky, Monkey island. Assassins Creed looked good too which i played on my friends pc once.) as well as park build games. I'd also like some games that I can play with my 7 year old daughter if she takes an interest - so they need to be non violent, fun and fairly intuitive to control.

Games I like the look of in particular are Jurassic World Evolution and Gran Turismo. Red Dead 2 also looks like a decent adventure game, as does Spiderman?

So, with that lot in mind:

1) Is a PS4 Slim a good buy?
2) Are there many games that you can buy which DON'T need you to be online? Will the games above work not online?
3) Can you play online games without a subscription to Playstation Online?
4) Your recommendations for games that match my 'profile' above?! smile
5) Years ago my friend had a racing game and he could choose from hundreds of different cars, and build his own garage etc. That looked great, think it might have been Xbox though. Anything similar on PS4 as it looks like GT has massively shrunk its available car offering in the current game?

Thanks for reading!

Yeah all the games you mention work off line.

Minecraft is a firm favourite of my 7 year old daughter. Works well as a 2 player or even 4 player game.

Skyrim is still and excellent single player adventure game.

We've discovered that if your seriously in to games you will probably want both ps and Xbox. There is always a title on the other system you want.

Like you I'm a big ps fan, preferring the machines over the Xbox. Especially preferring the controller and the main screen on the PS4. The main screen on the Xbox is a mess.

If the ps has the games you want go for it, however I must admit if driving games are your thing seriously consider Xbox for the Forza series. I can't pretend I'm a fan of the GT series overall despite being a ps fan.

Online gaming is a huge part of gaming nowadays, I recommend trying world of tanks console when you make your decision.

And yes get the biggest hd you can or budget for an external drive, my 500meg (I hope it's 500meg anyway otherwise it really is ridiculous) is full now with an assassin's creed game, GTA5, red dead 2 and world of tanks. That's it. Quite ridiculous really.

Do bear in mind both systems are coming to the end of life cycle, so I'd suggest not spending too much at this stage. I got the PS4 on launch and although it's displaying some hardware issues now I'm just hoping it hangs in till PS5 arrives I really don't want to buy a replacement till PS5 gets here.

Whats the benefit of the bigger HD please? If I'm putting discs in the drawer and not online, why the HD?

You have to save large chunks of data from the game to the hard drive regardless of whether you download it or play from the disk. My ageing PS4 has 500gb and it was filled in no time and I only had 5-6 games on there.

You might think that's fine and you can just delete one as and when; but it does become time consuming and highly irritating.

Alternatively you can buy an external HDD (which I did) if the need arises and it works just as speedily as the internal drive - if doing this get a PS4 with a rear USB connection because it looks unsightly plugged in at the front. Or you can swap the internal one out for a bigger size.

Personally if I were buying now I'd just get one with a 1tb drive.

even if you aren’t going to sign up to the subscription services I’d recommend connecting your console to the internet. Modern games are updated all the time and you’ll miss out if you’re not connected.

I don’t hear the other players unless I join a squad game and auto fill the squad, and why would I want to do that? biggrin

The Lego games are always a good bet - brilliant for kids to play alone (or adults!) or as a game for you to play with your kids (co-op play is a big part). Minecraft is a given - if you've never played it just give it a go. Release your inner Kevin McCloudlaugh

Don't get too hung up about the HDD size. I've got a 500Gb which was plenty for over a year. I've recently added a 4Tb USB HDD on (plug & play) which cost just over £100.

Like you, I've been a PS fan since the PS1 & also like you, I don't like particularly online games. The PS4 has some immense "offline" games - Skyrim, Horizon Dawn, Uncharted, Fallout 4 etc. Through the PS Plus subscription (optional), you also get a couple of "free" games every month - I've loved Mafia 3 & Mad Max recently - both "offline" games. Probably not ideal for a 7-year old though to be fair.

I'd agree with the racing game comments though. I'd love a GT2 or 3 replacement but I'm not sure if there is anything like that. GT whatever number seems to be more an "online experience" which doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. If I want to enter a Pagani in the Beginners Sunday Cup then I should be allowed.

I'm guessing that Spyro Reignited, Ratchet and Clank and the recent Crash Bandicoot "remaster" would be kid friendly - all in that same platforming genre though!

For adult offline play, there is a ton of good stuff:

God of War
Witcher 3
Drive Club
Red Dead Redemption 2
Last of Us remastered
PES 2019 (if football is your thing)
GTA V
Hitman
The Long Dark
Bloodborne
Farcry 5
Assassins Creed Origins (or Black Flag)

It was touted as THE driving title for the PS4 shortly after release and on release it was a howler - subsequent patches have made it (IMHO) the best arcade racer on the PS4. It’s pretty much structured like Forza in terms of collecting cars, building a garage and participating in league races - great graphics, some memorable tracks and a decent car collection.

Casual gamer?
I found I was updating my PS4 and games every time I seemed to go on it. (Call of duty mainly)

Only wanted to go on for half an hour whereas the updates took bloody ages.

Sold it in the end.
