Having mostly lost interest in games over the past couple of years or so, I did find I really enjoyed Limbo and Inside this year. Also loved Black: The Fall and been enjoying Little Nightmares. I guess that means side-scrolling puzzlers with a distinctly dark aesthetic and plot theme.

Any other recommendations?

Not side scrolling but I played The Sexy Brutale a couple of months ago and loved it. It's a murder mystery puzzle game with a time manipulation mechanic. Basically every chapter centres around a different character's death and you have to save them.

An oldie, but maybe Gunpoint

Otherwise sidescroll platformers Hollow Knight or Ori and the blind forest

Thanks all. I guess it doesn't have to be side-scrolling, just that it seemed that was what had been appealing to me of late. Funnily enough I have Kentucky Route Zero in my Steam wishlist but had forgotten about it. I take it that fits the bill based on my OP?

Do yourself a favour and get RDR2, it's by far the best game I've ever played.

What format?

Have a look at Castlevania: Requiem.

Death's Gambit is good if you find Dark Souls type games fun

Would recommend The Return of Obra Dinn (on steam); very enjoyable mystery/puzzle game from the same guy behind Papers Please.

wikipedia said:
When the Obra Dinn returns to its England port six years after going missing, the East India Company sends an insurance adjuster to determine what happened aboard the ship. Through the Memento Mortem and other clues, the adjuster works out the sequence of dark, brutal events since the ship's launch.

Thanks for the suggestions. Sorry should have said about the format in my OP - PC, I do have a PS3 but I guess not much new stuff being released there any more.

RDR2, that's essentially like GTA but in a Wild West setting, right? I lost interest in the last couple of GTA games fairly quickly, mainly due to lack of time needed to get in to them properly, that's possibly why shorter, more casual Indie games appeal I guess.

It's so far from GTA, the writing, the story and the characters are why it's such an incredible game, not to mention the stunning visuals. The level of detail can't be matched either. I can't stress enough how much you need to experience it.

If you've not played it yet I think you'd really like Fez. It's sidescrolling but in a 3d world, it works really well. Loads and loads of puzzles too. I wish I hadn't played it so I could play it fresh again....

Here's a good game for you to play on PC, My Summer Car, you build a car from scratch, fine tune it, customise it etc. It's a cracking game.
