I thought my Xbox was broken at first - then I started ejecting discs, removing external storage, then removing the ethernet cable - then it worked. Just after that a check online confirmed it was Xbox core down. About 5 minutes after that a mate rang up moaning that his new xbox was broken biggrin

Astonishing effect of such a failure. I suspect vast numbers of people thought their xbox was broken, and a few ended up in the bin.

There were some amusing trolls of the @XboxSupport twitter account - people putting playstations in their Amazon basket, etc.

That was annoying, there was nothing to suggest (to me anyway) it was a network issue. Menu would pop up, then go, couldn't access settings, black screen occasionally with flickering 'static'.

It's my Son's rather than mine (but I do use it) and I'm sure this isn't news, but it's annoying to me that hardware can fail so badly when it's not connected - are they really useless without an internet connection?

No, not usually, they just work as a standalone console. Usually an error displays if there's a connection issue, which is what was so bad about that outage. There was mention of them rolling back a change on the status page, so it looks like they'd done an update and not tested it right.

I just disconnected from the router and it started working again.

Someone had not tested error legs correctly.
