MWR 2 is the best COD and you can still get online lobbies.

Dunno what the player base is like on PC but WW2 is still very active on consoles. Added bonus is it's probably cheap as it's last years game.

If it's the single player rather than online multiplayer side of things you're looking for then CoD wouldn't be my first choice. Firstly i'd point out that the current one, Black Ops 4, doesn't have a campaign instead replacing it with an online Battle Royale mode. The theory goes that this years CoD, most likely Modern Warfare 4, will have a campaign but i don't think it's yet been confirmed. As for the other previous CoDs i found them to be pretty similar really and enjoyed them all, but ultimately you're looking at around 7 hours to complete and the campaigns increasingly became a bolt-on accessory to what was fundamentally an online multiplayer game.

So i would be looking more towards games where the single player campaign is much more front and centre of what the game has to offer. Ones that come to mind for me would be:

- The more recent Doom games (albeit playing Doom II never gets old and is also free with shedloads of mods). A new one, Doom Eternal, is likely to be released this year.
- The Wolfenstien games i.e. Wolfenstien: The New Order (2014) and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (2017)
- The Gears of War series
