I'm finally looking to replace my old XBox360 and 47" Samsung TV. I haven't bought anything like this for many years so I'm a bit bamboozled by the latest tech.

I fancy the 4K experience, so I'm after an XBox One X or PS4 Pro with a nice large TV (50+ inch?)

Anything to look out for or to avoid? i.e. are the super fast TV refresh rates pointless if the consoles are limited to 60Hz?

I like the idea of XBox backward compatibility, but I really liked my PS2 and am willing to consider going back to Sony.

Any tips or guidance?

Your only consideration should be the games you want to play as some are exclusive to each console.
The PS4 Pro and One X are both flagship consoles, neither are st.
However some people prefer the more stable refined xbox online experience.
Also, it depends what your mates play on, be it FIFA, Forza, Gran Turismo etc
Those console bundles will take you up to 400, so you have 600 for the best 4k telly you can find.

I've just spotted the PS Virtual Reality set which looks like great fun.

The games bundles I have seen tend to include horror/18 ratings. I would like to let my young kids try VR s does it come with kid friendly games? Does anyone have the PSVR? If so, good investment or a short-lived gimmick?

The main (non VR) games I would play on the consoles are APEX Legends and Fortnite.

PS5 is...at best guess, a max of 18 months away, so 2nd hand PS4 pro and a cheap Hisense would be my choice for now.

Hisense A6200 gets pretty good reviews if you arent too bothered with HDR.

One of those and a console will be within budget.

I got the Hisense A6550 in 43" for the PS4, got it for £270, I don't know anything about TV's but apparently it has 4k, hdr, udh and a bunch of other meaningless..to me letters. It was simple to set up, like really simple! And to my eye, the picture looks great. I did notice that on the HDMI ports only one has all the meaningless letters, I guess that could be an issue if you want to use it for anything other than a monitor.

Can you up the budget a little? I have an Oled TV and my goodness it makes a difference with a PS4 Pro.... The colours etc are just stunning.

I'm keen to get high refresh rates, as I have been playing a laptop with rubbish FPS.

Most of these TVs seem limited to 50Hz? Truview100 claims 100Hz but it just shows each frame twice?

Isnt there a big TV that can achieve 60Hz with the console? Confused.

I reserved a 4K TV today and went into to store for a final look at it before handing over my credit card.

I was pretty disappointed with it to be honest. Each picture looked pretty good, but the motion looked terrible to my eyes. In fast moving scenes, everything seemed a blur to the extent that I couldn't actually see what was happening.

The OLED screen did look more vivid but I noticed the demo they were showing was slow motion scenes like honey slowly dripping from a stirrer and water slowly splashing off stuff.

The guy in the shop explained that all LED TVs are limited to 50Hz refresh rates. Is this right?

The only option to get faster screen refresh rates it to get a computer monitor screen which can run to 144Hz.

Does a normal LCD TV give a decent gaming experience when paired with a current gen console?

How close were you standing to the TV in the shop? Also they always have shop-mode turned on to make the picture as bright and vibrant as possible in retail conditions, but it's not a true reflection of what the TV is capable of. IME you always need to spend time adjusting all the settings to get a decent picture/performance, especially for gameplay (depends what type of games you play also).

I have a 2 year old Samsung KS7500 which is LED but 4k HDR to go with my PS4 Pro - love it but I did have to make quite a few adjustments to get everything looking good. Some TVs do have a dedicated game mode which should reduce motion blur. Consoles, even the Pro and X, are designed to work with standard TV refresh rates, so hooking one up to a 144hz monitor would have zero benefits imo; plus you'd pay through the nose for a 144hz 50"+ screen.

If they have these in the Amazon Warehouse deals then for a 55” OLED it’s under £1k.

I guess it depends on your definition of decent, I'm old enough to remember black and white tele, so everything seems decent to me smile

All PS4 or Xbox one games are capped at absolute maximum 60fps, many are capped at 30fps, so a TV above 60 HZ will make absolutely zero difference.

- buy whichever console has most of the friends that you want to play with it on.
- pick up whichever newest samsung tv you can afford as they have very low input lag.
- if unsure just go to your nearest richer sounds and get the advice from them.

So the consoles are 60Hz but the TVs are 50Hz? Isn't the console processing more screen images than the TV can cope with?

If the TV had a higher rate than the console I couldn't see a problem, but this combination doesn't make sense to me.

I know I'm overthinking this! However, I have been struggling with ~10 fps for so long that I want to get the best gaming experience within my budget.

Honestly the quality of the panel is far more important than the refresh rate for console gaming.

Also, are you looking at the refresh rate for 4k? It will be different for 4k and for 1080p, and most games will be 1080p.

mainstream gaming is the pits at the moment so (and since you seem interested in VR) I'll throw you a curveball..... get an Oculus Quest.

Graphics are about the same as a 360 but..... well it's Virtual Reality without any of the negatives. Totally wireless, totally portable, 6 degrees of freedom, doesn't need a PC or console to run it.

You then don't need a TV (if it was just for gaming) or you have £600 left to buy one.

Guy at work brought one in and since then about 6 colleagues have ordered them! The 10 minute tutorial will blow you away.

Quick update from OP:

I went ahead and bought the TV I had initially reserved.

I'm really pleased with it! The picture seems much better than it did in the shop. I wonder if they dial in particularly bad modes to tempt you into the higher end TVs?

I'm still after a console. I'm edging towards a PS4 Pro for some reason. I can't find any discounted systems anywhere.

I keep seeing news about the PS5 being released next year and I'm tempted to hold out, but I really want to play some APEX Legends now.

Is anywhere selling PS4 Pros in the sales?

unless yout TV is 4k there's no real need for a PS4pro. 99% of people can't even tell the difference between it and the regular one. especially if you're sitting far away enough from the TV.

The new TV IS 4k though and I'd love to use it to its potential.

I'm dead set on smooth consistent gameplay as my laptop is driving me mad dropping down to 8 fps when enemies ambush me.

Doesnt the Pro give smoother gameplay over a standard PS4? Thats what many reviews said.
