The 8/16 bit era and the history of video games
Discussion
Become rather addicted to watching youtube videos of old consoles, the ones I own (and played endlessly as a kid.
I still have all the consoles (sadly not my C64), but am tempted by some of the 'mini's. Connecting the real consoles would appear to be a bit of a bugger today, not even sure last time I played one of my older ones.
Anyhoo, this list of 20 games.

I now really wanna play some of those old games.
But after watching so many videos, I have come across some really good and informative channels.
I fund this one really useful on looking at possible new/old consoles, the guy is dry, but knowledgeable.

I found this highly interesting and these videos are by different authors and on different topics yet lead into each other wonderfully. It also resolves my unique NES cartridge I have, a black tengen Gauntlet one. I've added a CM video to show how has religiously collected all cartridges. I always noticed the 'nintendo seal of approval', yet as a kid, I never really knew what it meant or the history of what created it. Never knew how snidely Atari operated back in the court case days.

I checked the games on the c64, the only ones I fancy are MI1&2, and two games isn't worth it.
I am gonna purchase a witch, so I get those old ones on that I think.
I still fire up an emulator, a have a game of Hades Nebula or Paradroid every now and then I am gonna purchase a witch, so I get those old ones on that I think.
Damn these threads, reminds me I need to fix the 3 inch drive on my 6128 over the Christmas break.

still have a C64C in the cupboard but needs a power pack to get it working again.

Pffft, Paradroid - much better as Quazatron on the Spectrum. Damn these threads, reminds me I need to fix the 3 inch drive on my 6128 over the Christmas break.

I've been watching a lot of these vidoes too - some great resources on youtube. 8-bit guy is quite watchable, but I prefer Neil at Retromancave's style.
I find RetroPie is pretty good but its always a faff getting the controls set up for a given game, considerign one of the pre-packaged ones that come all set up with controllers.
Did nearly buy an original C64 again but then had a word with myself.
Might build an arcade cabinet next year though, chap I work with does them so I will pick his brains, he builds them and donates them to various charities.

The c64 mini is quite good now you can put any game on it that you like. It does need an update to be able to change joystick ports though, as loads of games are unplayable with its current set up. I haven't played it for a while so this may be fixed now.
Brought back some great memories though. Green Beret, BMX simulator, paradroid, uridium, summer games 2, winter games, impossible mission...ah the memories!

I've got most of the mini consoles, including the Neo Geo Mini, have the Turbografx-16 mini on pre-order as well, they're OK for what they are, I know I can get better experiences for nothing at all, but I like the official releases, and the size of them etc. more interested in them for aesthetic reasons, they look pretty cool. I did jailbreak the NES mini and stick all NES games on it though.
I already have two Analogue consoles, the Super NT and Mega SG which play SNES and Mega Drive games, which are a great way to play older games on modern TV's.

I have 3 main methods for playing retro games: PlayStation Classic, AT Games Mega Drive Flashback and my phone.
The PlayStation Classic is a good little system as long as you pick it up cheap. I've seen it for less than £20. It's a piece of piss to "hack". I've got around 60 games on mine.
The AT Games Mega Drive Flashback gets alot of abuse from the retro gaming community due to its dubious emulation quality. However I don't have a problem with it and it had two key advantages over the Mega Drive Mini. It has a fully functional cartridge slot and the 2018 update has an SD Card slot so I can add a ton of ROMs to it
Finally for everything else I use my Android phone. I've had it running everything up to GameCube and Dreamcast and my Xbox One controller works perfectly with it.
For me, if you can't add games then it's not worth it.

I built my own :1 'for spares' C64 from ebay
1 C64 to USB keyboard converter
1 Raspberry pi
An assortment of cables to extend USB ports etc
1 SD card with retropi
Took me about 2 weeks to get all the parts, and an afternoon to assemble. The most difficult bit was removal of the keys and cleaning the manky old C64 case.
The Game Over book, by David Sheff I think it is, is excellent. Just a great insight into how a big company can really dominate an industry.
Be careful though, there are two versions, one is around 150 pages more than the other and goes into some more detail that is worth having. I will see if I can find my copy and tell you how many pages is in the full version.

I also have the PS Classic and the AT mega drive (wasn't aware of the new SD card version though!). Love them both, I'm not a hardcore gamer and the gaming experience is the same as I remember it from my youth (back when I was a hardcore gamer). I enjoy both systems too! I've also modded my PS and have put all the games on it that I have kept in my cupboard. The only downside is the emulation is too laggy for the pinball game True Pinball to be playable, which is a shame. The PlayStation Classic is a good little system as long as you pick it up cheap. That aside I'd recommend them too! I've also just hooked up our Nintendo Wii also after an 8 year hiatus and forgot how much family fun it is.

Retro gaming is great fun!
As for YouTube vids, Angry Video Nerd is pretty good in small doses. Metal Jesus Rocks has a ton of videos on old games machines and he also interviews other people who are really knowledgeable on older, sometimes niche, systems.

OK, it's not 16 bit, but erm,
