Folks,

Now the winter is descending I want to find a way to while away the odd idle hour.

I’ve had an Xbox 360 before and love playing GTA/CoD online, it’s a bit knackered now though and up for replacement.

Any ideas on a fairly cheap way back into gaming? Ideally don’t want to pay too many silly subscriptions on top of XBL etc...

Nothing fancy, 1 controller and a couple of games.

I'd wait until a bit further in the month and see what deals pop up for Black Friday. Stuff usually appears throughout the month as the sales seem to last forever. Might be an idea to give a feel for what sort of games you enjoyed previously and we can advise on systems/games that would fit the brief.

There's GTA V and a new CoD out now, doubt you'd find both in a package but they would be a good bet for options to play. You mention you don't want online packages but if you are keen to play online then you'll need an online subscription for either XBox or Playstation.

Teach me not for reading it all properly. Added another line to my response but you'd replied before I added it. There's a new COD Modern Warfare game out this week that's supposed to be good. GTA V looks a lot prettier on the PS4/XBox One and the online has loads more going on these days too.

Cant beat the value of some of the Xbox One S bundles. That and 2nd hand games from CEX and you are laughing.
Xbox Live though is a must though if you want to play against real people. CDKeys is one of the cheapest places, dont give MS your credit card details.

Check some battle royale games out if you've not played any yet. Personally the most fun iv had on a computer since counter strike days.

https://www.console-deals.com/ if you're buying new, and it's not a big uplift over typical used prices these days.

Black Friday does often bring some bargains but other stuff (like the current 10% off via ebay) can be very close too.

If you have a group of mates you want to join in with, buy what they have.
Otherwise, choose based on any exclusive title you must play (ie. Gran Turismo, oyu have to get a PS4, Forza, has to be xbox)
Personally, I like the xbox multiplayer system better, and by all accounts is a lot more stable. Also the xbox has more tactile triggers with rumble built in.
Costs are all a muchness.

Get an XBox One S, add the Ultimate Game Pass - access to something like 200+ games, many of them A-List titles, includes the latest Forza, Halo, Metro etc.
