Had a rush of blood at a computer fair a couple of months ago and bought a new gaming pc. Wasn't planned, but I've wanted to get back into pc gaming for twenty years (going back to being a teenager and playing the original rainbow six on the family pc). The purchase turned out to be a nightmare - they put 8gb of ram in instead of 16gb and an AMD1300 instead of a 2700. Eventually got that sorted and had a friend install the new parts for me.

Anyway, the sheer number of games is somewhat intimidating! Where do you start?! I've been playing huge, triple A adventures in PS4 for years - the Witcher, assassin's creed games, Metal Gear Solid, Skyrim SE, Dragon Age Inquisition. Big, time consuming titles that you have to out serious time into. And I fancy a change.

Given the breadth of experience on PC I'd like some different styles. I love strategy and city builders but didn't play them on console because, well, it's just not right is it?! Having said that, I played the st out of both xcom games on console, which were incredible. Anything more like that would be great.

So, you have free reign to recommend some games that are very pc - things you don't see on console so much.

What do you say?

I personally love Deus Ex, Deus Ex Human Revolution and Deus Ex Mankind Divided on PC (Not Invisible War as it's rubbish). You choose whether to go all guns blazing, sneak or hack your way through.

Also just started playing Skyrim and Witcher 3, though you have experience of those.

Get Steam installed and see what takes your fancy on the daily queue...

If you liked XCOM you'll probably love Phoenix Point, though it's now released I think it needs more gameplay balancing, so maybe wait a few months for the devs to do some patches.

It's made by the guys behind XCOM, they did a kickstarter which actually worked and funded the developed of the game. Phoenix Point is basically XCOM with a realistic sci fi horror style, more depth to the shooting and wounding mechanics and more inventory management. I think it's fantastic, but as I say, it could do with some tweaks to the difficulty scaling as the campaign progresses.

Fallout 4 on PC would be superb? Especially if you get it in VR and use the Rift?

Darkest Dungeon is an interesting game if you like Xcom.

It’s a side scrolling rogue like RPG with turn based combat. The party and resource management is similar to xcom and it’s a got a really good dark sense of humour.

All great suggestions. I've actually done Fallout 4 on PS4. Loved it and might actually get it again and look into some graphics mods or something.

Phoenix nights and darkest dungeon sound perfect. Thanks all.

Give a few indie games that mightn't have made it to console a go too.

FTL is an awesome little space/resource/roguelike than can consume afternoons with ease.

Terraria is also amazing 2D/combat/crafting/exploration gem.

Old but still brilliant. The original Rome Total War and Medieval Total War 2.

Age of Empires 2 HD (another style of game that is better on PC than PS4).

FTL I actually have done on my laptop a few years ago. Brilliant game - am I right in thinking the same developers did Into the Breach?

Half life 2.
It can be modded to the moon and back.

Look for offers on Steam, I got Fallout 4 with all the dlc for £7.

Let us know how you get on. smile

Right, based off of your suggestions (and inspired by eg the FTL suggestion led to discovering Into the Breach) and in no particular order as I will pick up things when they are bargains, this is the list I've come up with:

Darkest Dungeon (cheap as chips so will probably be first).
Phoenix Point (will take advice and let it be polished for a few months).
Into The Breach.
Total War Warhammer 2 (I was a huge Warhammer geek back in the day so the total War recommendation led there).
Half Life 2 (loved the original but never played the sequel).
Divinity 2 (huge single player games were what I was avoiding but that looks brilliant and reviews are unanimously excellent).

As I said, I'll pick them up in no particular order when they are bargains!

Darkest Dungeon, Into the Breach and Half Life 2 are all a fiver or thereabouts so I'll be getting those first. I'm also tempted by the Mass Effect trilogy as I never replayed those and don't have any last gen consoles. Loved those games and can get them for a fiver.

Edit - also looked into some kind of free to play multiplayer game and Apex Legends seems like a well reviewed modern one so giving that a go. Let me know if there's better. Not done any multiplayer at all since Halo 3 on the xbox360 and co-op gears of war (also tempted by Gears 5).

That's right, very annoyed I stupidly managed to miss getting Into the Breach for free during Epic games store Christmas giveaways. I haven't played it but it has excellent reviews.

My Brother recommended I not get Darkest Dungeon after he rage uninstalled it after more than a few RNJ rolls went against him!

I enjoyed Apex Legends more than Fortnite, World of Warships is also excellent and F2P.

If you're looking for a good city builder then Cities Skylines has taken over the mantle from Sim City these days. Awesome game and a great modding community.

Plenty of YouTube videos as well, some of the stuff people out there produce is pretty awesome.

I actually got that one last week! Enjoying it, but my city looks crap compared to some I've seen on YouTube.

Yep, I’m 150hrs in now and know the feeling. Think it takes a hell of a lot of dedication and you basically have to mod the game to hell in order to come close to some of the masterpieces on there.

My personal favourite is someones recreation of the city of Cork, pretty much street by street:

Strategy? Crusader Kings II is free to keep on Steam right now.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/203770/Crusader...

It's similar to the management and strategy of Total War games. It won't tax your system, but it's free.

CK III is coming this year.

Thanks - grabbed that! Saw something about it in PC Gamer a couple of months back so was on my radar.

Incredible. The work that goes into something like that can't be overstated. Really struggling with traffic management in mine, though that seems a common problem for everyone!
