Good evening,

We have an ageing PS3 that has done us well. We are not gamers by any stretch and use it predominantly as a DVD player.

Our kids (9 and 7) are both into Minecraft and World of Tanks. They are also getting more interested in games they see advertised online (genre rather than console specific).

A couple of questions:

1. Does the PS4 connect to home WiFi and then enable you to play both Minecraft and World of Tanks?
2. I know you can pick up used examples but I am never certain it is worth it. New ones seem to be about £250 so perhaps worth it for the warranty?

Thank you,

Dan

Hi Dan,

Yes the PS4 will connect to your homes wifi and you will be able to play both Minecraft and World of tanks, although you will have to buy Minecraft. Not sure about world of tanks.

I dont know the going rate for new/used PS4s, but if you buy used through the likes of game, you'll get a 1 year warranty.

Although the PS5 has recently been released, the ps4 should still be relevant for a good few years yet.

I'd be looking at a used PS4 Pro for around £200.

I'd want it to come with the box, the controller, the controller charging lead and the HDMI cable.

There are PLENTY of people who have PS4 Pro and are upgrading to a PS5 as soon as they can get their hands on one.

I'd buy it from a good home on gumtree from a user who has been on gumtree for a while and I'd want to see it working first.

The thumb sticks on the controllers do wear a bit, so you can expect that at some point you may want to buy a new controller or replace the thumbsticks/put on covers that go on the thumbsticks.

For what it is worth, PS4 hardware seems to be bulletproof. I bought a very cheap PS4 Pro used a couple of years ago and haven't even had a whiff of a problem with it. My original PS4 is 6.5 years old and my girlfriend still plays it daily. I would buy used and wouldn't pay more for a warranty.

This is my experience too. I think if they have sat on the carpet or very close in a dusty house then over time the heatsinks become clogged but in a normally clean ish house, they should be fine.

I've had a PS4 for around 6 years and it gets very regular use as games machine and bluray player. It's never gone wrong and I agree that it's likely to be 'relevant' for a while yet. Looking at the PS5, I don't really see any major reason to upgrade even if they were freely available, none of the launch games appealed to me. It might also be worth changing the HDD to an SSD, cheap, easy to do and speeds the whole thing up - I did this a few months ago as I was running out of space and wondered why I hadn't done it much earlier, recommended!

For those games, would a Switch be an option?

I use my PS3 and PS4 for watching Netflix, Prime, Now and BBC iPlayer (though Now and BBC are no longer supported on PS3). I don't know how good the Switch is for those services, but the gaming options might be more suitable to your children given their age.

Aim for a second hand Pro.

Sign up for PlayStation plus which is about £50 for a year and You’ll have access to a load of games. Some will be suitable for the kids. Saves having to buy games they may or may not like/play. I think Crash Bandicoot is available at the minute. That will keep them entertained for a while.

Thank you for all the advice and really helpful.

I have decided to get a new one from Argos. The simple reason is that I felt that going to someone’s house to pick something up is probably morally wrong during Covid. I have arranged to pick up the PS4 from our local Sainsburys which we will combine with shopping.

Only about £50 difference so I think that is entirely acceptable.

Got the Minecraft disc also so the little one can play that tonight after (home)school.

Will see how to get onto World of Tanks.

I assume that there is a ‘connect to internet’ icon and then you just look up WOT?

Thanks again and I am sure I will be back in a few hours for more advice!

Make sure you set it up well before anyone wants to play on it. There will most likely be a rather large system software update.

From memory you will be guided through the setup process its fairly straightforward.

World of Tank will be the Blitz version - simple free download once you've got it up and running.

If you do want to join PS Plus, either to play online or to take advantage of the various free games you get each month, don't buy it via the Playstation store, just google Playstation Plus 12 month and buy one from somewhere like CDKeys etc.

They typically have a 12 month pass for £40 (instead of £50 on the store) and sometimes as low as £35 or so.

You just get e-mailed the access code, redeem that on the Playstation store and there you go, a nice little saving smile

Have done this every year for many years, works fine. I assume they just bulk buy them when there are discounts on or are able to get them at a reduced rate from Sony somehow.

Update 001

We are up and running!

Have completed the initial log in and set up.

Minecraft disc working well and kids getting used to a controller rather than iPad.

Tried to download World of Tanks but having an issue. Game downloads almost all the way, according to the download bar, but does not complete. WiFi fine etc. Any ideas?

Is it getting stuck on 99%? Or moving onto the 'copying files' screen?

The copying files can take ages, often longer than it takes to download the file. You just have to let it run.

If stuck on 99% then check the downloads list (under Notifications) and see if it is trying to download an update file as well as the game. If so, pause the update file until the game has been downloaded and installed.

If you buy from cex you get a 2 year warranty so a good place to buy from.

I'd say 1tb is best to go for as some games are huge installs.

The PS4 Pro is discontinued. I purchased one used for £250 with ten games. Turns out when I got to the house of the seller we sort of knew each other. They are robust, the Pros are loud but that is normal. Mines a later revised 2018 model.

The pros are loud because the cooling gets clogged with dust. Take it apart and clean it out and they are very quiet.

Loud Pros are a thing and it doesn't cause any issues. I don't fancy taking mine apart but mines only loud on certain games (interiors on Spiderman for example)
