No point without a headset, literally you may as well not play or stick it on mute.
You need the directional sound for the whole combat system, aggressive push, retreat, moving, third parties, etc.
I play a lot, or at least did, think 3 k/d now and 40+% win rate but as I say have stopped playing so not getting enough practise!
Solos is terrible, even if you are rubbish spend some time practising in the range so you can hit a stationary target, keep playing in squads until you get invited and start to play regularly with the same people.
Unfortunately it isn’t a game you can pick up and be good at, and this is from someone who is good with thousands of hours in FPS games.

Bush campers are the worst, easy to spot nowadays though.
Sorry but winning once shows it doesn’t work, a shotgun is pointless unless you are a) very very good and b) sub 30M, but against a L3’d up player no chance. (Exc early game).
I’m 85% top 10 and 40% win (was 50%+ last season), probably the only thing I know what I’m actually on about!
AR or SMG (Sanhok and Vikendi) with a bolt action or DMR.
M4 is probably the easiest to control but lacks the damage of AK / Beryl.
Try the UMP decent damage and low recoil, lacks range but paired with a SLR / SKS it’s a great combo.
I started out just playing solos, but as above if you want to get better and actually experience the Battle Royale part (not being shot in the back by bush campers or people who sit in one building the whole game) then play squads, duos is generally full of experienced players.

I just checked and I've had 10 chicken dinners.
I'm also a fan of the shotgun, especially the DBS bullpup. Now they've got this new medal system, the only medal I have 100+ in is "up close and personal" which is because I kill a lot of players with a shotgun to the face. This is a strategy developed entirely from my limited ability to hit the side of a barn door with a proper gun from a proper distance away.

Used to play alot - pretty much exclusively solos. Had some success - but nothing like the guy above.
Stopped when they introduced bots - which must be well over a year ago now.
Has it got any better? When I gave up and moved to Warzone I was finding 50%+ of participants in solo matches were bots.

I like a game of this, but I really am rubbish - it’s 50/50 versus bots! Ten chicken dinners is the stuff of dreams! I even play with cross play turned off for more bots so I have a chance, but still get destroyed by a level 500 player hiding in a bush on Sanhok!
I have a headset, but find it’s too quiet to hear footsteps etc and want to turn it up but can’t!

I feel we are on the same page!I have a headset, but find it’s too quiet to hear footsteps etc and want to turn it up but can’t!
Yesterday, I killed two extremely good players (high level and lots of gold medals hanging off their profiles!).
Both times, I did the same thing...

I collected fuel cans, then poured the fuel all over the ground floor of a house, with a little trail leading up the stairs. I then shot at them from the bedroom windows, just to piss them off. Then, when they came into the house, I lit the fuel trail at the top of the stairs, so that as they ran in, the entire ground floor burst into flames.
