Can anyone recommend a cheap but semi decent set of steering wheel and pedals for the PC? I have not played a racing game for over 15 years, but seeing how good F1 2021 looks I want to play it.

Cheaper the better as I don't actually know how much use it will get and it is my first ever steering wheel. From my investigation so far I definitely want force feedback and I am not bothered if it has a clutch pedal or a proper gear stick, flappy paddle is fine.

What is seen as the best starter wheel and pedals?

I'd take a look at the Logitech offerings.

I've had a G27 for years and its been great, i'm upgrading to full direct drive later this year, but for a beginner the g series is pretty faultless.

You won't go wrong with a G series, I've had a G25 and then a G27. Both faultless. The latest model is the G923 with the G29/290 being the previous model.

However they will teach you bad habbits with the brakes as they are not realistic (ie not the same as you have in your car). If you can stretch to them get the TCLM brakes by Thrustmaster as they have a loadcell. Meaninng they measure the perssure on the pedal and not the traval as on the G series brakes. You can get after market kits for the G series brakes if you want to upgrade them later.

The TCLM brakes will work with a G series wheel https://www.amazon.co.uk/ThrustMaster-T-Lcm-Pedals...

The G29/290 is here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-Driving-Racing-P...

I moved to a Thrustmaster 300rs GT and now have a Fanatec Clubsport 2.5.

Thank you for the responses, it looks like a G923 would be a good place to start as a beginner. I have a feeling that once you get into it, it can start to get expensive pretty quickly!

Do you have a link to the upgrade for the pedals as this does sound like it would make a massive difference to the whole feel.

These things also seem to hold their value pretty well so upgrading at a later date might not be so painful.

If you buy the g29, you can also get the truebrake mod £50 which i use. Makes massive difference to spring.

Mimics a loadcell, but you will need a rig.

As I thought, this is rapidly going to get out of control. I have already told my girlfriend that we are going to have to get rid of the bed in the spare bedroom as this is likely to become my simulator room.......

It doesn't have too, g29 and truebrake and you're at the races. Mines mounted on a playseat challenge and i'm competitive. Some of the fastest guy's still use the g29.

I have also got the wheel mod lol.

Logitech have the G29/G920 for £207 but they don't have the G29 in stock. I assume they both work on the PC, what is the advantage of going for the G29 over the G920?

I use a g923, you can’t go wrong really. They put a stiffer spring under the brake pedal so you really have to put some force into it, I get in with it fine.
I use it with a play seat challenge, which again is fine. Not the most comfortable after an hour or so but does the job and the whole lot cost me less than £400.

The first time I used it was a revelation, the immersion is fantastic compared to a controller. I’ve switched from PS4/Xbox to pc and I’m caning the arse out of Assetto Corsa - so much fun!

I got a g29 recently and is great but you do need to sort the brake pedal, easily done by removing the rubber bung, takes ten minutes with a screwdriver. Or you can map the brake to use clutch pedal in game.

Also looked at thrust master T150 that was similar price but didn’t look quite as solid.

Never used them personally, but logitech seems to be the goto for budget wheels.

I'm using Thrustmaster T300rs which is great, but they aren't the most reliable- I'm on my 3rd, 1 broke which may have been down to me, other one just died.

As for stands/ chairs, you cant go wrong with a playseat challenge. Yes, it looks like an overgrown camping chair but it does the job well and folds flat for storage. I only moved on from that as I had the space for a permanent setup.

Stand to include seat or no? If yes, as I said earlier, it's hard to beat the playseat challenge. Usually plenty around secondhand too.

Stand alone stands I'm not sure on. Used to be Wheel stand Pros but I've also seen some decent looking gt omegas.

If possible I'd say go down the playseat challenge route.

No seat unfortunately, would be nice to have but not enough room.

Do people have the shifter as well? Probably won't work with F1 given there's 2 extra gears and the rate you need to shift, but could be good for Dirt or Forza

Logitech G920 is great, got mine £150 with stand does it's job for ACC and Forza. Forza you may need to fiddle with settings and it feels better.

Swap it for a sofa bed or sofa futon, that way you can keep it for emergency bedroom use.

If you use something like a Wheelstand and a suitable chair you can put the whole thing away when not in use. One of those little mini-cockpit/racing seat things would be more difficult.
