The dead generation?

Does anyone feel like like this gen is something of a dead generation? It just feels lifeless as though there’s no buzz or high quality exciting new games.

I have an XBSX. Spent three months on Gamepass playing some random titles, many quite old. Stopped that and got the latest COD. Bit bored of it. Nothing else I want or am looking forward to.

I agree with you, even though it's a massive jump in spec they've made it feel like a 'half' generation as everything so far seems to be available for both new and old generations simultaneously in one purchase, and games that are coming out are just upgrades of previously released games.

I have a Series X too and hoping see something truly new emerge soon!

I play a lot of FIFA online with a mate and I've had to download the XB1 version onto my X because he hasn't upgraded. He keeps asking for reasons to upgrade and to be honest I can't give him a good one

Even if you go on the Gamefaqs forums which used to be the epicentre of the gaming community, they are dead as a dodo. Next to no activity. Even on the forums for the most popular games.

Same here. it just doesn't seem that much of a leap to me, its been out for what, nearly a year now and there is nothing that sparks particular interest. I've never been an early adopter, but I would at least look at the new games and think "I wish I could play that" Particularly when I had a PS1 while my friends were getting 360s!

The last game that has genuinely impressed me and changed what I thought possible in a video game was Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. I've just been spoiled with the introduction of photorealistic open world games of the sort that I dreamed of as a child, nothing amazes me anymore really.

I think it is because the cost of developing the games has become more of a limiting factor than the performance of whatever hardware its running on. Nowadays the big games that really show off a modern console's potential like Red Dead 2, Ghost of Tsushima and Final Fantasy cost hundreds of millions of dollars and we still expect to pay the same £40-60 for it that we did 20 years ago despite the fact that development costs have more that doubled. At the end of the day, the bigger and more technically and graphically impressive your game is the more it's going to cost regardless of what it's running on. Eventually we will reach the point where people will simply not be willing to pay the higher prices needed to fund games that are a meaningful improvement over the last generation.

Sure, the first year has been a little dead.
However next year there's Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok, Gran Turismo 7, all of which I am really looking forward to.

I appreciate these are Sony Exclusives, not sure what there is to look forward to on the Xbox side of things...

With most games being multi-generation I do think they are somewhat limited in their ability to push the boundaries without significantly increasing development costs.

Games are made for profit, greater development costs means lower profits, plus covid impact on development …

I think 2022 / 2023 we will start to see true ‘next gen’ games.

Far Cry 6 due out soon which I'm hoping will challenge my XBSX far more than Lego Uncovered which I've been occupying myself with over the last few weeks.

I was thinking this. The only reason I have found to upgrade would be shorter loading times, but it is as though the industry has just given up. Seems such a shame

No, I've been gaming since I was three and this is one the best years I can remember. Not so much for 'big' titles but the gaming landscape has changed and the big AAA and B grade bangers of the previous generations aren't really as common or popular.

However, I just feel like I haven't got enough time to play all the great games that are out now. Games Pass constantly throws great titles my way, there are fantastic remasters left, right and centre and a slew of new releases that I want to play.

First year of next gen is always a total waste of time, most of the content is no better, always better to wait a few years for stuff to really use the potential.

or like me just use a PC< upgrade now and then and not have t pay the richest people in the world to be ALLOWED to play online, am still amazed so many of you suckers fell for it

Yes I remember playing MW2 on PSN for free. It’s always felt like a rip off to me paying to play online. I spent £6.99 to play Cold War online for a month. Had some fun but it petered out and I don’t really feel like throwing more money into a black hole to do it again. I’ll just play offline against bots if I get the itch to play.

Gaming has just become a money maker and its the reason why nothing good is coming along.

There are a few gems that have come from indie developers that are few and far between, AAA titles are just a snooze fest and have been for years. Look at the movie industry that is also largely the same.

I don't think PS+ is too expensive, you can get it from CD keys for 40 something quid, you get the free games every month, one of which is PS5 exclusive (Hell let Loose this month), I only play online so maybe a bit biased As for the new consoles, they just need some new games to come through, GT7 looks like a compromise, ACC looks promising, a new Destiny/Division/Fallout is what I'd like to see, but with a 100 million PS4's about and only 15 million PS5's, I may have to wait awhile..

Yes it is now motivated purely by profit, at the expense of innovation. Whenever anything allegedly groundbreaking comes along, it turns out to be overhyped rubbish e.g. Days Gone, Cyberpunk etc.

Games like FIFA, COD etc. are essentially a re-skin of the previous game. They are like the junk food of gaming. It’s a crying shame Metal Gear Solid is done for…that was a series I could get behind

That's because they have gone to a PC style architecture/approach and the new generation of consoles is just a more powerful version of the previous one, a bit like a higher specced PC.

Previously, the generations were massively different hardware-wise and usually resulted in a pretty massive and unambinguous leap in performance and capability over the last one. Hence, intense interest from the gamer and plenty of anticipation for the launch of the new hardware.

Doesn't help that it's been so hard to get a hold of a PS5/XBX either. There was a lot of buzz at launch but it has now pretty much died down - still very difficult to find the hardware in stock though. And there hasn't exactly been a flood of titles that truly push the new hardware.

End result - meh. I'm sticking with my PS4 Pro for old games and have moved to PC going forward. Way better IMO.

I keep looking at upgrading every now and again but keep finding more important things to spend my money on and somehow I’ve made it this far without finding a game I want to pay that I can’t.
The only new game I’ve bought in the past few years are the Total War games, I’ve been making do with the online games like World of Tanks and War Thunder.

Yup, at the moment my PS5 is pretty much being used to play the "Free" games you get with PS plus (along with Battlefield for online fun)..

I got the PS5 COD but it was pretty much the same as the PS4 IMHO which was disappointing. Hell, even the "Fetch me their souls" hadn't really changed since the PS3 COD!!

BUT we have Far Cry and BF2042 coming, I am hoping they will have sufficient upgrades to make it worthwhile (64 people a team on Battlefield with maps larger than ever before is a good start).
