7 year old wants Nintendo switch
Discussion
As it sounds, he wants one for Christmas as his friends have one. Last console I played was the N64 so out of touch would be an understatement. Which switch does he want (OLED??) and, more to the point, is it getting replaced any time soon as getting one just before they replace it would be irritating!!
The OLED version is a pretty new updated model although the original switch has been out for a few years. Can’t see them replacing it entirely for a while.
There are basically two models, one you can connect to a TV and the Lite which you can’t. The bigger one is worth the premium for this feature IMO.
You can still buy the old non OLED model cheaper than the OLED. Games are compatible across all three models

Def get the one that plugs into the TV, no point messing about with a tiny screen, OLED or not. Also means if they take it places eg holidays, friends house you can simply plug in via hdmi. Also, there’s a Switch app so you can control (and remotely end) it’s use. We’ve never had to do that just the threat is enough!

Don’t get the lite get the propper one so to speak. Also pick up a pro controller for when he’s in bed and you are playing mario kart on the TV.
Very much that, at least one pro controller is a must if you're planning on multiplayer. The joycon controllers are little RSI generators for adult sized hands when you're playing on TV.ZedLeg said:

Works well and you can use it for PC too if that's your thing.
We're buying our 8yr old a Switch for Christmas, just the standard one rather than the OLed, as there's a £50 difference, and he won't even notice the better screen.
We got him a bundle with Mario Kart & a Pokémon game for £320. I'm looking forward to playing some N64 games personally

I noticed they’re upgrading the Nintendo online service at the end of the month to include a selection of N64 and Megadrive games. Should be good for a bit of nostalgia. I normally buy a 3 month code from Amazon for 6 or 7 quid, seems reasonable.
I think it was only £18 for a full year which I thought was pretty good. My wife has been playing through all the old NES / SNES mario games over the last couple of weeks. It's great to be able to play those with the convenience of modern tech.I'm really looking forward to the N64 releases though. Our N64 still gets pretty regular use so it will be great to have everything on one system with all the modern save benefits etc. I'm also really looking forward to playing Mario64 with a Switch controller, rather then the original N64 one!

There's literally minutes of entertainment in some of them but there's some classics too. I'm still playing Breath of the Wild which is one of the best games on any platform IMO. Think I'm finally tooled up enough to have a go at the end boss I'm really looking forward to the N64 releases though.
