Is game development over?

I know graphics are getting better but despite that, I have been left feeling let down by all my recent purchases and I've ended up going back to games nearly 20 years old.

Story mode is dead - BF2042 and yet the BF franchise used to have great story modes, especially BC1 and BC2.
Gameplay - nothing has moved on, in fact, everything seems dumbed down and slower - the latest Halo is a slog and a half, maps are bigger just because they can be and this just turns things into a slog (Far Cry series etc)
Graphics - no new wow factor, I've been looking forward to the next gen version of COD Cold War and it looks like a 2005 game with some glitter, because that is exactly what it is - it is clearly based on such an old engine now that if it were a car it wouldnt pay VED.

Despite what my ex says, bigger isn't always best - for now I've gone back to the epic Wolfensteins and old Battlefields, theres just no innovation and all this bloody woke inclusive bullst has left there with no humor or adult language.

You're playing the wrongs games, I'm afraid. There are lots of games that are innovative or story driven, or do things that have never been done before.

If you mean that you are disapointed that your CoD's, Ass Creed or BF are the same then.. well what do you expect? They are the gaming equivalent of fast food.

I'm not going to comment much on the 'woke/sjw' stuff, but personally I'm glad that games are more inclusive for everybody, and don't just target a specific demographic.

Most of the games you listed are First Person Shooters and I would agree that yes, they haven't really moved on much since the PS3/Xbox 360 days. However there are still some masterpieces being made in other genres.

I'm not sure what system you are playing on but there are some great story driven single-player games on the PlayStation (some of these have started appearing on PC now too). Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn are probably my favourite to release in the last few years.

Yes there is a lot of crap out there, but good games are still being made.

I don't know about the new games but I have recently started playing battlefield bad company 2 again on the PS3, the servers still work and I have had some really good games, sometimes there is a lack of people but its still fun and if you drop into a good team who work together it still a great game.
Is it time to upgrade to a PS4 ? hehe

Was just about to come in and say the same. Tarkov is the best FPS I’ve ever played and is a country mile ahead of anything else

Mt=y take on modern gaming.

Heavily biased as I mainly play sims.

But I have found that devs now will do anything to keep you playing and that mainly seems to mean making things incredibly difficult at very early stages.

I give you the Dark Souls games, dying is fun, no it isnt.
I play a lot of games for fun and find it increasingly annoying to be stopped from fun by devs jerking off about the bosses they make to make the game falsely hard, when up to that point it has been a cruise.

So ramping up in sharp spikes is annoying.

On to race sims, rubber banding, pack bunching to block the track, insanely aggressive AI even on low levels, ignorance of weather on lap times of AI, all these things affect sims

And no-one will ever find a way to eliminate or find a way to apportion blame properly in things like Iracing or ACC so instead of coming up with a better way they just blame both parties even if some tt takes you out from flat out behind. Hence why this puts a lot of people off while also pleasing some.

Modern AAA titles are crap. A lot of the hidden gems, unique selling points and revolutionary gameplay loops are hidden away in little independent gems on itchio, occasionally Steam or in the mainstream but they get buried under (quite literally) the thousands of games released every month across multiple platforms. They tend to be quite stylistic and attempt to do more with less - something modern game design forgot about 15 years ago.

Watch documentaries on titles like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark (yes, Rare fan boy) It was (largely) people whom who had never released a commercial game, were given free reign to do what they wanted, liked or looked cool (rather than what the money men wanted) and for the most part was people in a room experimenting and making up the rules as they went. They scrimped on VA by using their own devs, designed level layouts before adding a narrative and took 2 years longer than they should've. Clearly not a sustainable business model in the long term, but look at what emerged. Still widely regarded as two of the best story driven shooters of all time. A passion project. (Though not without drama - toxic work hours, fall outs)

Sadly, you now have publishers breathing down your neck, teams of hundreds spread over often multiple countries, financial strain, various lead designers pulling you in different directions, making overzealous promises to aid marketing and pre orders etc. It is a gigantic, clinical operation with very little individual say so. Some developers get it mostly right (Rockstar, Valve) but the vast majority have really struggled to produce anything of proper quality for some time now. Everything is either rushed, poorly executed or just simply lacks soul.

But there is hope - the indie scene is bigger than ever, you really do often have to spend time digging but the scene is alive and well.

As others have said you just have to get away from the big franchises and live service stuff.

I binned off most of the live service games I played last year and have played some great stuff.

Been working through the Playstation exclusive titles and have finished Death Stranding, The Last Of Us 1 & 2 and Days Gone, currently working on Horizon Zero Dawn.

Loads of really great indie titles, from stuff that you can bash through in a couple of hours like Unpacking to stuff that I've put 40+ hours into like Loop Hero and Monster Train.

Just started the new Hitman games thanks to Gamepass.

Tarkov came along just at the right time for me, where I was becoming disillusioned like the OP…

Have been playing for 2 years now and am still astonished by the devs achievement every time I play (daily!). There’s just nothing else like it.

Try the Last of Us for a story. And Days Gone. Sadly they are PS4 games rather than 5 but still...

I agree on the Graphics front, frankly I've had a PS5 since release and I am yet to see a game with the graphics I expected - the Matrix Demo however, well, once we get a game like that it will be incredible IMHO... As yet F1 is pretty much the same as the 2020 in the main (there are a few improvements). Battlefield 2042 the same goes, there are a few improvements..

For different gameplay, what about Metro Exodus? (not my usual style as it requires sneaking etc but I find it pretty good)...

For FPS games, Doom / Doom Eternal are great fun.

There are decent games out there. I quite like ghostrunner, very fast sword vs gun combat.

Project downfall is pretty good too, from a gameplay perspective, not graphically amazing though.

As someone who has gamed since the Atari days I am really not sure how you can think game development is dead .
Yes if you buy and play every call of duty it’s going to become extremely boring ,and ultimately every fps game is a variation on a theme but there are some truly amazing games being produced ,often unlike anything before .

I see where you're coming from. Forza Horizon 5 is poor, compared to the excellent fourth installment. It's an empty, boring map, although quite pretty. It's just a dull game and it really shouldn't be. I should think ditching the festival aspect of it and re-booting the franchise next time round would be what it needs.

I will say the following games over the last 4/5 years are absolutely top notch though:

Red Dead Redemption 2
Forza Horizon 4
Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order
Dirt Rally 2
Uncharted 4
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition (technically old games but they've been superbly updated)

Depends what you want?

Want to fight eldritch monsters and sentient fridges while throwing forklift trucks from mid air? Control is your game.

Want to solve a mystery in a land where forgotten items come to life? Then forgotten Anne is your game.

Want to fight giant metal dinosaurs on a post apocalyptic world? Well horizon zero dawn is your game.

Want to solve the mystery around your brother while manipulating people's emotions to your own end? Try True Colours.

Or how about trying to survive in 14th century France during a plague? Plague tale innocence is your game.

Of course, that may all be a bit too sjw/woke for you given all the women and some occasional lgbt themes, so how about design and building dreadnoughts to shoot the st out of each other? Although ships are generally women, so.. maybe not.

All of these are currently installed on my PC, my nearly 7 year old is having a great time with Forgotten Anne at the moment. There's such a range of games out there beyond your CoDs (and yes I have also played things like ass creed odessy).

And if none of that takes your fancy, there's always the greatest game of all time:

... not that I own that of course.

Have to disagree, I only 'game' casually but the amount of work that goes into games these days compared to before is just mad, and though some games play like they did from 2000s but with better graphics a more than few are just better, more immersive and fun.

Trying to judge a last minute lunge into Chicane in the latest F1 games is with AI drivers that will react like humans rather than the rubber band/stuck to rail cars in the original GT games is great fun.

Currently I've put about 50hrs into the latest Ghost Recon, it got slated in the reviews on original release, but I picked it up on sale for something like £10, and with all the work the developers have post in post release its not only looks fantastic plays really well especially on a 50inch+ OLED screen. Its far more fun than running the original ghost recon on a 15inch display from back in 2000 whilst trying to max out a Voodoo graphics card .

Add in the fact how easy it is to run games - I'm just using Stadia these days, gaming now seems to be easier/better than ever.......However for me some games are still S**** like Fifa, even on a massive screen smile
