A long long long time ago I went full on into modding GTR2 and I'd like to try something similar with a more modern game.

The end-goal of my GTR2 modding was a Nurburgring 24hr race for myself and friends. Now maybe there's a game out there that can do everything out of the box, but it's always fun to tinker a bit as well.

Full 24Hr track.
Day Night cycle
Dynamic Weather
100 AI cars
Multiple classes of cars (I added everything from GT1s to a comedy Lacetti)
Staggered grid.
Tunable AI.
AI Co-pilot (For when everyone needs a simultaneous wee break at 1am)

The other fun mod to GTR2 was the biblically insane Targa Florio course.

I don't really have the heart to trawl through my rickety old GTR2 setup for hours and hours and I'd desperately hope something has come along with better options than digging around in config files on a text editor to do what I want.

Goal is fun with friends not at all competitive.

Assetto Corsa and a raft of mods will get you there.

As above, Assetto Corsa is the main option.

You'll want the 'custom shaders patch' which gives the dynamic weather and lighting etc. (amongst other things)

Very much worth using Content Manager as the actual UI to the game instead as it's far more tailorable and I think you'll need it to do some of what you want.

I'm not 100% sure there's an AI auto-pilot swap mid race though...

Also, a grid of 100 cars (assuming 90+ AI) is going to require a SERIOUS processor I'm fairly sure.

Targa Florio is available for it too. The Trento Bondone hill climb is also fun. The Transfagarasan of course. LA Canyons is amazing. The list goes on. Assetto Corsa is the game you want hehe

This is probably your best bet.

Some people still use rFactor, however I never got on with the physics engine.

I've tried rFactor in over a year. The last time I loaded it up all my controls need reconfigured, then all my sound, then graphics weren't running smoothly. It took an hour of troubleshooting to get on track.

Sounds like rFactor - tried booting up rFactor 2 on my rig once, never again...

This guy tried to do what I want to do and ran into a CPU bug/limit at 64 cars. Which isn't bad, but more would be better!

The Targa Florio project for AS looks pretty cool (the bits that are done at least).

Have been delving into AC this week in preparation for next weekend's N24 and it's bloody impressive.

As recommended I've grabbed Content manager, CSP and Sol mods along with a 108 grid version of Nurburgring.

60 ai cars seems to be the limit of my CPU without the physics going haywire but it looks amazing. With time acceleration wound up to x40 within two laps I could see sunset, night running (those campsites are something else, brought back good memories of N24) then sunrise.

Remaining things to work out are how to put and how to get the AI driver to turn off once it's on.
