Shown on the Nvidia GTC for the 4000 series launch was an updated ray traced Portal (on Steam) free to current owners of the game.

And RTX remix is a tool you can use to RTX any game you put into it and save it as a mod to that game you can load up !!!!

Are they doing Portal 2 with this as well? Didn't see it in the video.

Always worth another play through though smile

Oh sorry I didn’t mean a play through with the RTX, I don’t have the kit. Just want to play the games again smile

Recently went back to this with a younger family member and the way they think and approach puzzles has put a whole new spin on it for me.

Also, apparently I'm a complete fkwit now which is amusing for them, soul crushing for me laugh
I played the first game a bit recently with my two lads (ages eight and six) and it pretty much blew their minds!

It's still my favourite game of all time, the first Portal game. Never *quite* gelled with the story and humour in the second game, felt like it lost a little of the stark, menacing aesthetic. I'm not a huge fan of Stephen Merchant though so that didn't help smile

I play on PC, never really got the hang of FPS games with a console pad - keys and mouse feel much more natural to me.

Over 60fps 1440p easily mated to the recommended CPU spec for Ultra (12700K), same as the 3080 12GB and 3080 Ti. There's a reason why nvidia didn't slap in a slide showing the higher end 30 series cards with it using DLSS2 and only showed DLSS off vs DLSS3.

It's available. Separate game (23GB download) so you still have original Portal in your library too.

I have a 3080 and at 1440p I see no slow FPS at all, I can't get MSI or Nvidia overlay to work to see. Managed to get the Steam FPS overlay to work and on the settings I am using I see between 45-50 fps.

Also in the RTX menu it says DLSS v3 which is weird as my card doesn't have it.

Have to say I'm a little underwhelmed by this. Yes some of the lighting stuff is impressive but it does feel like an add on to a game engine which was never originally built for ray tracing. Lighting on some of the surface materials still doesn't look great. Performance is only just about adequate on my 3070 FE and i5-12600. Control, on the other hand, runs far more fluidly.

It's a bit flaky too, crashed once or twice already.

I guess it is what it is, a mod for non-RTX game engines. Hopefully things get better from here though

It has been built using Nvidia's new automatic RTX rebuilding engine Remix. So it's never going to match a scratch built ray tracing game. But depending how automatic it is it's still impressive that it can be applied to an old game like Portal and work, albeit not a quickly.

Ive tried it and was underwhelmed. I’ve “only” got a 2060 which is probably entry level for RTX but I had to drop the resolution to get acceptable frame rate. Even then I didn’t see anything particularly special. I know it’s automated mod technology but i didn’t see anything on a 15 year old game to make me think that RTX is worth the overhead at this point.
