Resident Evil 4: Remastered
Discussion
Having recently completed this game I thought I'd flag it here because for those that haven't tried it, it's an excellent game in my opinion.
For some reason, the Resident Evil series entirely skipped me by and this is the first one I've ever played. It only really came onto the radar because the internet was briefly awash with people playing it.
Upsides:
- I played through on the default difficulty and I'd say it was spot on. Every time I found myself struggling it was because i was using the wrong strategy.
- I'm not a fan of games where ammo starvation is a big issue and I'd say RE4 has it about right. You can't just spam rounds everywhere, but with a bit of restraint and using the right guns at the right time, lack of ammo is rarely much of an issue.
- Good storyline with some impressive monsters.
Bad:
- Some of the movement mechanics can feel a bit janky at times, particularly the slow recovery after taking damage so by the time you recover, you immediately take damage again.
- The weapon purchase and upgrade system meant i only ended up using a few of the weapons throughout the game. The blame for that probably sits with me, but i think the game could do more to give you more opportunities to use more of what the game has to offer.
- I think I payed maybe £40 to buy it from Steam, so pretty much the price of a new AAA game. I can see that would put some people off for a remaster, particularly if you had bought the original back in the day. But it's such a comprehensive rework it seems reasonable to me.
It took me 16 hours to complete, which according to howlongtobeat.com is about average.
Overall psychopath rating: 8.5/10 chainsaws (for any Red Dwarf fans out there
)

) Nice.
I bought it for PS2 and PS4. tried to play it on PS4 but it didn't gel with me. the movement style and controls were annoying and it all felt a bit grey/brown and boring. I'm debating buying the PS5 version from gumtree and playing it and selling it on. The visuals on the new version look great.
|Thanks for the review.

Snubs, if that is the first one you have played you should definitely "go back to" the RE2 and 3 remakes (particularly 2).
I'm far from an RE expert, having played the games sporadically over the years (played 1 & 2, missed 3 & 4, played 5, missed 6, done 7 recently, not got to 8 yet!), but RE2 remake is amazing and I recently enjoyed Nemesis remake too.
I'll definitely pick this up at some point as I never played the original so it would be a completely new experience for me.
