Do you need to be near your PS5 for it to work, or can it be played anywhere with wifi?

One of my mates has one. Really likes it. Used in his house with his wifi and tried it out at his mates house, so essentially remoting across the internet to his home ps5. I'll get an update on how it worked.

So sounds like you can use it wherever there's wifi? I wonder if you need your PS5 left turned on?

PS5 needs to be on standby mode. You can be anywhere in the world with WiFi and it will work. It’s a great bit of kit, I want one. Can’t find one though, sold out everywhere.

No. Seems a pointless device to me.

Its a portable device with limited usability on the go.

A used steam deck seems to make more sense as it does not rely on a web connection.

Looks good.
How would you say they work best considering wifi is needed? When in other rooms of your house, friends house, phone hotspot etc?

I really struggle to see the point of it. You could get similar functionality for a lot less money by buying a controller for your phone and using that the PS app for remote play.

My mate was going to buy one but bought and Asus ROG Ally instead in the end - which seems like a much more sensible (albeit more expensive) option for that kind of format device.

I might get a ROG Ally at some point, although I worry that even that will end up sat on a shelf for the vast majority of the time, the same as my PSP did. I'm definitely yet to be convinced that playing games on a small 1080p screen is what I want to do.

If you have access to a big tv all the time then the device seems a bit pointless, i agree.

If you have a household where the tv is in use by others then the portal seems a cool solution. I've played more steamdeck and nintendo switch in recent times than my PS5 or Top gaming PC. So, personally I can see the use in the handheld market. The main benefit is the instant power up and into the exact point I left it. THat efficiency makes me have more short fast gaming sessions that I wouldn't do if I had to go upstairs and grab my controller, fiure up the tv and the console, wait for boot up and then load the game.

The ps portal doesn't quite do what a switch or a steam deck does, or maybe it does if you keep the PS5 in rest mode exactly with the game ready to go.

There used to be a bunch ot twitter feeds that alerted when the PS5 was available, is there a similar one for the Portal? I can't find any.

Do Xbox do anything like this? I know you can play on a mobile but it's a bit small. I'm thinking of something that can be carried in a bag for travel.

It has one massive problem in that it can only be signed into ONE account on your PS5 that you can’t switch so if your household has multiple users on your PS5 then tough, it will only log into to the one account.

This is such a huge oversight.
