Discussion
As there seems to be more of us playing this now (and a couple of us blaming The Mighty Jingles) I thought it might be worth having a discussion thread plus I have a question for those who have been doing base building.
On my second re-spawn. First time seemed to go well with me finding guns, bags, and a GPS early on then dying part through ignorance. Re-spawned and spent over 3 hours with just melee weapons and no GPS. Net result died through radiation. Now I'm on my next re-spawn and am actually saving before leaving camp (though I still lost 3 hours of game play due to my own stupidity this morning).
One question though, and not where to find gun racks. I know I can get rid of piles of rubbish with the crowbar and pick axe, but how do I get rid of these rubbish piles? Can't find anything that works and I've realised I will need to put a gate in place as I had a zombie wander in.

You cant get rid of those smaller piles. You can place a base marker that will stop the zombies spawing there.
Up the road to the left is a large industrial building that I am thinking of making a base in. If you go straight forward and slightly to the left across the road and keep going is the Labs bunker entrance. There are 6 coyote soldiers guarding it that have some great loot on them.
This is probably a better base location than the one you are looking at. Its just to the north of the centre of Whitewood. Its more central and closer to the safezone. There are 6 ammo boxes to loot and plenty of everything else plus a Boss.

Not sure it doesnt display but click on the green thing

Will take a note to have a look at it. Not dared go in to the main towns yet, though I have completed the 'easy' primary infection near the settler camp. Took me several attempts to do each secondary though when I came to do the primary I was better equipped and knew to run away after doing about 40% damage. Still the boss who chases you almost killed me - one more hit and I was toast.
I tried that lab. Saved before setting off. Got close and was toasted. Next time I was more cautious going round though I could only find half their bodies (it was dark). I then hit a catch - I have only one lvl 2 security card. Just glad i saved before going through. Reloaded to save my card forgetting that would re-spawn the soldiers outside - fortunately the entrance gave me decent cover.

The first video I watched showed this based but at the time the entrance was a number of shipping containers forming a gate which would not allow a car through. Not sure it doesnt display but click on the green thing

You need some decent weapons etc to do the Labs plus the keycards but you can just pick off the soldiers for now with a hunting rifle and loot them. You can mark all the soldiers with your binos so that you know where they are. The black market trader at the safezone sometimes has tier 3 loot crates which you can get some decent weapons from. Just left click on soldiers and zombies to mark them when looking through the binos.
In the early game I dont shoot much, I try and sneak around and use my whistle ability and melee to take most zombies out. I will shoot acidic undead though. I try and build up some stocks of ammo for later, Whitewood has 6 ammo boxes and the gun store slightly north has 4 more. Followed by a quick trip to kill the soldiers at labs is a fantastic loot run.
You can go a long way with pretty basic weapons. The hunting rifle is great, I like the Benelli M4 auto shotty from the whitewood police station. The XM250 silenced machine gun is awesome as well, just build up some ammo supplies.
Zombies dont spawn at the warehouse so you dont need to plant a flag there.

This is turning in to a Dappr has a question Derek Withers answers .
At the labs, got in and opened the first door, but then could not open either of the two within the lobby. No clue why as I have 3 spare lvl 2 security cards. Have I missed a puzzle or have I been hit with a bug?
edit - searching on the Steam page was fruitless just lots of people stuck, but google fu resulted in my finding a wiki page. Went right before left and found the cerberus gun, then left found death as I was swarmed by dogs and zombies. Fortunately saved just inside the entrance to the vault (before opening anything) and only one Coyote soldier had respawned
BTW looks like the tagging now goes once you have killed your target, so finding the bodies is once more frustrating.
For anyone else reading this and been tempted through the likes of Jingles - it can be a tough game but rewarding, though after a while it becomes a little pokemon in trying to find enough key cards of a high enough level and finding a few areas are very deadly. Oh and I now do not carry grenades, kept catching the G key and occasionally killing myself ....

I am not sure if you found this out but in the very first room in labs there is a broken window on your left. Crouch and shoot the sparking box on the wall and that will get you enough power to start and open a lot of the doors.
There is an Access all areas level 3 keycard with unlimited uses somewhere but its pretty rare.
I am really liking the base at the large Industrial building near the Labs. Zombies will wander close enough to attack me in my base if Im noisy so I am fencing it off and I have a couple of turrets set up but they are a little janky and very loud.

I'm not much help, I'm only exploring in the game rather than anything meaningful like you both are.
I think the begining of the game is the best bit. Its natural to want all the Legendary weapons but they actually make it a bit easy and spoil the game. I am playing it as a more chill sandbox now and I try to add some restrictions to make it a little harder. I collect Legendaries weapons but I rarely use any, I try and use pretty crappy early game weapons. I am trying to collect furniture for my base and I have found a conrete loot run now so I might make concrete walls for the base. If I die I don't save scum, I have to get back to my body to retrieve my gear.
Didn't know you can retrieve your gear on a respawn. Wonder if that carries on through loads (i.e. save at the end of a session then load when you next play) as all air drops and special events are not - including from scanned laptops. Can't remember where my first 2-3 deaths were though moot considering the gear I had at the time.
I am looking to gradually work my way through the infestations though after 4 it's already a bit rinse and repeat now I have my method nearly sorted.

I now have a police station that came complete with 4 SWAT vans (and there was an ambulance round the corner) and a subterranean garage.

Of course as night came down I discovered that the spawn point is right on the road so I had to make and place about 15 sets of chain link plus a door. Oh and it is right in the north-west, so too far away to be of any real use. Still lots of loot crates there.
