Your favourite game?
Discussion
I've just been watching Star Wars part 3 on DVD and it has put me in mind of what was, and still is, my favourite game of all time.
I am of course talking about the simply awesome Tie-Fighter!
Leagues ahead of it's clumsy predecessor X-Wing, challenging, fantastic looking, but above all, highly, highly addictive.
As a kid I used to get up early to plug in my headphones to the PC and submerge myself in enourmous space battles, hunting down Rebel scum and blasting them to pieces (or hiding fom the rediculously quick A-wings!!)
I wish I still had it and even more I wish that my PC could still play it, and/or someone could redesign it for a modern PC. (Not touching anything except for updating the graphics)
What about you lot - what game would you love to be able to re-open and start it all over again?
Phil

X-wing was a classic.
I seem to remember having to switch power between shields, engines etc depending on what you were tryng to do or damage levels.
It is possible to play older games on modern PCs. The biggest hurdle is the sound drivers though, but there is a nifty bit of software out there that fools old DOS-based games into thinking that certain sound cards are present (eg. SoundBlaster 2.0) and provides the path between the DOS game's sound drivers and the windows driver to your sound hardware. You'll also need a DOS mouse driver emulator. As for the game itself, Windows 2K and XP have an emulator mode for DOS games which you can play around with until you find something that works.
It's a bit of a pain in the neck to sort it all out, but it can be done.
Otherwise, there is nothing to stop you dual-booting a PC to DOS, but then you have a new problem of a lack of DOS drivers for modern hardware.
Edit: This article on the Microsoft website is a good place to start.

I still have X-Wing Alliance, I think that is still the most perfect Star Wars space sim ever!

Mine would be either Gunship 2000 or Angband ![]()
:shudder: I was trying to rack my brains about the game I played the most in my life, you've just reminded me of it! I've been playing Angband (and the variations thereof) for close to 10 years now (as in I will play it at least once a month) and still haven't completed the damn game.
In fact I may try and find the version I started playing and have it as a New Year's resolution to complete it...
Fav games is a toughy because you like different games for different reasons although I would say Carmageddon (which has just been installed again on XP Pro
) and Unreal Tourney, which I was reasonably competant at
. Although I am most addicted to World of Warcraft.
However a friend did a lan mod for Quake in which there were exploding jet packs, custom skins and whoever won got their toon dancing in victory at the end with a snippet of a song of their choice; mine was 'Hot Stuff' by Donna Summer
(very rarely played I might add
)

I have very fond memories of hours and hours lost playing TIE Fighter. It's a great shame that the space-sim games likw TIE, X-Wing, Wing Commander and Freespace have gone the way of the dodo in recent times - everything seems to be either FPS or RTS these days. I can't bear to think how great a modern-day space sim would look with todays processors and DX9/ SM3 graphics.
Back on topic, my favourite games are now relatively old. Absolute favourite of all time is the original Deus Ex (not the complete abortion that was DX - Invisible War). Fantasticly involving, in-depth and very lengthy story, multi-branched gameplay, lots of character development options, and great action. The graphics were so-so, even at the time it came out, but it didn't spoil the experience. I also loved the original System Shock game. Great villain, functional graphics but superb atmosphere, simple yet effective plot and some very original level design. SS2 was ok, but IMHO nowhere as good as the original.
Ah, the memories... Doom, Wolf3D, Command & Conquer, Duke Nukem 3D, Tomb Raider, Half-Life, Splinter Cell, Unreal Tournament, No-One Lives Forever, Soldier of Fortune, Crimson Skies, Serious Sam, BloodRayne, Hitman, Operation Flashpoint, Grand Theft Auto 3, Uplink, the list goes on...
At the moment, I'm playing through a stockpile of recent games I bought whilst building my new PC, and also a few "modern classics" to see what they look like with Athlon FX-57 and dual GeForce 7800GTX SLI power behind them. At the moment, I'm blasting my way through Half-Life 2, Doom 3 and Far Cry again, but also playing for the first time Battlefield 2, Black & White 2, FEAR, GTA: San Andreas, NFS Most Wanted, Quake 4, The Matrix: Path of Neo and Trackmania Sunrise.
