Oh dear. I have called 5 different numbers this morning trying to find out why I can't get XBOX live working. Spoke to xbox360 customer support, xbox 360 technical, microsoft customer support, ntl broadband technical support and microsoft ICS (although the chap who answered the phone had NEVER heard of ICS before!).

So, with still no xbox live I naturally turn to the body I should have gone to in the first place; Pistonheads.

Can you help me guys?

I have a pc with NTL Home Broadband Internet external modem. On the back of the modem I have the USB port connected to the pc and a spare ethernet port where the xbox cable conveniently goes.

The first problem I had when connecting to xbx live was an IP adress issue. So I switched off the modem for a minute and then rebooted it.
Then it worked, and an IP adress was allocated. THEN I had problems with the passport (?) account setup, which once I thought had been completed, took me right back to the start again. Saying the adress was already done or something.?

That was all yesterday. So this morning I start the phoning thing which has bought me conflicting stories and incompetence. Ive been told that I can have both the USB port connected to the pc and the ethernet to the xbox, but need ICS (internet connection sharing) for it to work. I was then told by a different chap that I can't have both the USB port and ethernet port on the modem, and have to plug the ethernet cable into the pc??!

Can someone who is running XBox live through NTL Broadband succesfully, please tell me step by step how they did it?

I would by eternally gratefull.

I think you should be safe having the xbox plugged into the modem alongside the PC, quick question though, when your XBox picked up the IP address and allowed you to connect was the PC on at all? As if the PC was off when it worked it might cause some conflicts if you have the PC on. You could try connecting the XBox ethernet cable into your PC's ethernet port which is what I do, your pc will need to be on obviously to connect to the Live service.

Couple of things I am sure of, if your modem has an USB lead to the PC and a seperate Ethernet for connection to another device, then you do not need ICS running on the PC, this is used for sharing the PC's connection, i.e USB modem to PC then ethernet connection from PC (via a network card) to another device.

Cant really help with the rest of it I'm afraid (use Netgear stuff myself) quick search on the 360 forums ussually pays dividend.

Mmm NTL looks a bit more complicated than adsl, it would appear your cable modem may not have router ability, the link below dicusses a similar problem.

PLEASE don't go trying to add MAC addresses to your 360, just leave it all set to automatic.

I have the Xbox set to automatic and all I did was take it out of the box, plug it into my router and it worked, it ALSO works when connected directly to the modem.

However, I think I may have the answer for you

I have NTL with cable modem and have had a similar problem.

First do some trouble shooting :

If you can (network card?), connect the PC to the modem using the ethernet cable. Do not have the USB connected to either.

My guess is that you will recieve no internet on your PC.

If my guess is wrong, please ignore the below

If that is the case though, leave the PC and the modem connected with the ethernet cable and install your modem again with the NTL disc you have.

You should then have an internet conection.

Swap the cable from the back of the PC into the 360 and get practising PGR3

It seems that if you installed the NTL software using the USB cable, the ethernet port doesn't get enabled ?
At least that's what I found when I clicked on USB on the install by mistake once.

Disclaimer : I cannot say if the USB connection will still work OR whether the above will work at all. I recommend a router

Edited to say your Passport password is your Hotmail one

Not sure about your modem, but with mine (Surfboard 4100) you CAN NOT use the USB & Ethernet connections at the same time.

Get a cheap router, much easier all round and no need to have the PC on when using the XBox.

Absolutely right - all that stuff about using ICS on your PC is so you can plug the PC into the modem and the xbox into your PC. Not both into the modem at the same time.

I've been using my xbox, ps2 and all my other PCs through a single surfboard modem for ages - I just use a basic router to handle the sharing.
